The only criticism I have of the team is that they seem a bit patronising at times – “let’s explain to the viewers” when they could just ask to explain/elaborate. I know a lot of people won’t know what’s going on but it’s a niggly dislike of mine.

I think Brundle is fine as top commentator, he only shouts when he needs to not COMING ROUND THE BEND, UP THE HILL

I was looking at the previous Legard-spec commentary actually. Brundle makes far fewer mistakes and I don’t think anyone, even Legard, can deny that. Having said that, I was looking at the James Allen/Legard style commentary, and there is 1 thing I sorely miss. They seemed to be able to play with our moods and dial up the tension and excitement at times; while Brundle seems more tame. You can’t have everything I guess.

I think Jake does an impressive job. Presenting a live TV show is not easy, but he makes it look easy.
I remember seeing a clip where they overlayed the audio he receives in his ear while the cameras are rolling. It’s not easy to follow and makes you appreciate how difficult a job it really is. There are not many people who can do this well.

If the iplayer link still works you can view it here:

Will SKY keep Jake in the pitlane? Maybe not. They may fall back to running a studio panel in the UK and just have a few roaming reporters at the track.
If they do decide to run the show from the pitlane like the BBC, they’ll need someone just as talented who can keep up with all this information in a very distracting environment.

Icthyes I know what you mean. That can be annoying but I always get the feeling that when Jake that really he just wants an explanation and uses the audience as an excuse :P

    I agree raymondu.

I agree with Steph and Icthyes; however I hate it even more when EJ asks about something technical as if it’s obvious to the audience when it wouldn’t be. I don’t have any problem with technical stuff, but I don’t like it. It’s like he’s showing off. For example when Paul Hembery was talking of camber and blistering in Monza, Eddie chirped in immediately about Toe In. I completely understand what toe in is; but the normal viewer wouldn’t. I felt as if he’s showing off.

I wasn’t expecting good things from Jake when the BBC first took over, thinking of him as a kids TV presenter, but have found him to be great.

He is so slick and in control, enthusiastic without being patronising and he holds it all together with ease so I have been really impressed with him. He’s not supposed to me an amazingly knowledgeable expert, that’s why he’s surrounded by ex drivers and owners etc. He’s there to hold the show and everyones opinions together and I don’t see how that could be done better than Jake has been doing it.

I don’t think there’s a chance he’ll be there for sky next year, unless the BBC ‘loan’ him out as part of this ridiculous deal. He’s a BBC boy and probably already contracted to them for the Olympics next year.

I like the Brundle & Coulthard commentary apart from having to wonder how much Brundle is actually looking at the screen at times…

I think he’s probably looking at the timing screen when he misses things, I’ve noticed it’s usually when he’s saying something like ‘such and such is x seconds ahead of doo dah’.

You get a pretty good idea of what goes on in the commentary box from watching the practice sessions on the red button, especially when Ant is in.

Does anyone else think Jake’s most recent blog “Saying goodbye to Europe” had a touch of “saying goodbye to F1″ about it?

I hope not because he’s pretty unflappable during BBC’s ambitious, live walkabouts – and asks some challenging questions in the post-race Forums. There have been occasional smug or nauseating moments – mostly on Twitter as you say Keith, he should have a separate Twitter for F1.

Martin Brundle looked uncomfortable as a presenter in that one race he did. Maybe Ted Kravitz could do it, but I hope BBC keep the roving element even if Jake’s off to the Olympics.

Sky will just have a studio full of suits – they always do, with big names rather than good communicators. Mark Blundell and Nigel Mansell – I’d pay extra not to watch that…

I agree with Raymondu999 about what Martin Brundle doesn’t do that Allen and Legard used to – but I don’t miss it at all! I thought the previous two insulted the viewers’ intelligence – I don’t need to be told when to be excited…

Agreed. With Brundle there is that radio-style quality where it feels like he is talking to you and not just a mass audience. There is that unspoken feeling that he trusts the viewers know their F1 and are very knowledgable, whilst welcoming more casual viewers.

The only thing I don’t really like about the BBC coverage is the cheesy-as-hell montages they make. Cheapens it a little bit.
