The general consensus seems to be that Karthikeyan is more at blame than Vettel; whether or not it was a racing incident is down to opinion. Personally I think Karthikeyan is almost entirely to blame. In hindsight, Vettel should have given the HRT more room, however Karthikeyan still had enough room. In the end, Vettel probably should have been more courteous, but ultimately the blame has to lie to Karthikeyan and his haste to get back into the slipstream of Vettel.
Secondly, regarding Vettel’s reaction. His gestures on-track were entirely understandable- however you apportion the blame, Karthikeyan was still at least partly at fault, and therefore at least partly to blame for Vettel’s race being ruined. We’ve seen similar reactions provoked from drivers for a whole lot less than that, and I really don’t know why people are complaining.
Thirdly, Vettel’s comments after the race…
I can see why Vettel was angry, but calling Karthikeyan an idiot is highly disrespectful. I was disgusted with Hamilton’s behaviour after Monaco last year, and this is a similar thing. I’m happy to see drivers speak their minds, but not when they sound like immature brats.
Honestly, if someone calls me an idiot, that’s really not going to upset me. The word is mildly offensive at best, and whilst there may have been more polite ways to express his feelings, I generally agree with what he said.
Comparing Vettel’s comments to Hamilton’s last year is frankly ridiculous. Vettel called Karthikeyan an idiot; Hamilton pulled the race card and claimed that he was being victimised, when actually Hamilton was 100% to blame.
In my opinion, Vettel needs to be more circumspect with his ‘assumptions’ of the actions of others including allowing for perceived deficiencies of a poor driver in a slow car from a weak team.
The pass was done when the incident occurred. Vettel gave Karthikeyan enough room, yet Karthikeyan still felt the need to cut across the back of Vettel to get back into his slipstream. The only assumption Vettel made was that a car he fairly, cleanly and legitimately overtook would not then drive into the back of him. HRT is a weak team and their car is slow, but that does not excuse Karthikeyan’s poor driving.
