I’m not convinced being CWG host is going as he might like – there’s too many heads jostling for screen time, and the Games itself is a joke – like all athletics events nowadays, it’s only worth watching to get a good laugh out of how utterly empty the grandstands and stadiums are day in, day out. Even clever camera angles can’t hide it any more.

Yes but you’re talking about the likes of Turkey where the track is 100 miles from nowhere and the tickets are priced out of the range of the average earner.

Athletics tournaments like the CWG or Olympics or World Championships are a once every 4 years deal, and a once-off for the host city. So there should by rights be a big tourist influx and a load of local foot traffic for a “once-off world class” sporting event. The truth is that hardly anyone travels to these things and the locals don’t go because athletics and Olympic sports just aren’t that interesting. The last World Championships were in Germany, a country with plenty of money, in a big city, in a sports-friendly nation who would expect lots of local support. The place was deserted. Utterly deserted.

I didn’t like Lee’s coverage at all, I thought she was nervous, and really struggled to do anything more than simply tell us what the next piece of VT was. It really makes me respect Jake for the job he does. I think they should have given Ted the job to be honest, he’s reasonably used to doing small sections in front of the camera for VTs and in the forum, and I think he is really engaging and knowledgeable. I found that whatever knowledge Lee has of F1 didn’t show through in the least. Either way, I’m glad Jake’ll be back in a week’s time.
