People around here are very quick to call for the boycott of a race.
Because if every british F1 fan cancels their Vodafone contract or stops using Shell fuel etc, Mr Vodafone and Mr Shell are going to be telling the team owners that their approval of the decision to broadcast on Sky is costing them a lot of money and bad publicity.
Actually, those companies will first of all ask themselves why they’ve suddenly lost millions of customers. “Formula 1 went to Pay TV” is unlikely to be their first answer. There will likely be marketing campaigns to try and get people back to those products. It will probably be some time before they make the connection to Formula 1. In fact, they may well be unaware of it until 2018, when Sky’s contract is up. And even if they do figure it out, they will likely end their contracts with the teams – who in turn will find new sponsors – rather than inspiring the teams to lobby for the sport to return to free-to-air television.
