Lewis CERTAINLY has something to prove this year- all F1 drivers do every year, WDC or not.

I think Lewis is as fast (if not faster) than Alonso, an immense talent and great to watch, but as stated he does make the occasional error that Alonso doesnt seem to make. And has not been in contention since 2008. For me Alonso has him pipped for best driver ATM, and Vettel under-rated as well with the “Newey Design” argument. It pains me to say it as a Webber fan, but Vettel IS the goods.

I have previously described Hamilton as “the most overrated of the top 6 drivers” and I dont mean by rating his talent, but more so the perception of what he has acheived thus far- one could be mistaken that its Lewis and not Seb who is 3 x WDC or even Lewis not The Schu who is 7 x WDC! This is by no means his fault, by really the publics perception of him.

When he almost won in year 1, then did win in year two he was the new Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Stewart etc………………….. but has not been able to clinch WDC x 2 like most thought he would have. He will perform very well this year and I hope we see him in the middle of the podium. But I think many will be surprised how close Nico will stay with him this year- I would love to him win one in the future!!!!

Yes but he didnt !!! Webber could (NO- SHOULD) have won 2010 but he crashed in Korea!! I still cry myself to sleep each night that Mark is not 1 X WDC and Seb just 2 x WDC!! (Disclaimer: No, I dont cry myself to sleep, comment was for entertainment purposes only LOL)

No. This was not the ONLY reason but a contributing reason. For a driver to be a World Drivers Champion it takes a full year of great driving with a competitive or great car- Seb has the latter.
I assume like most of you sad F1 fans I hate the off season- so I watch the entire 2012 season on replays (I dont think my wife knows there is an offseason :). The Alonso crash in Spa makes me feel sick!! I saw my hero in Ayrton be killed in May 1994, and I dont think people realise that if the Lotus went 12 inches closer Alonso would have broken his neck!! No saftey in F1 can mitigrate that sideways impact!!! That said this did not cost him, but smaller factors through the year, mainly quali, pits stops and the likes. It takes a full season to win!!

Wow, Hamilton must be a very poor driver, if he could’ve easily won 4 WDCs, but only won one. Same goes for Alonso.

Actually, the skills of the driver contending for the WDC are in my opinion less important than the goodwill a driver/constructor has with the other drivers on the track. When the championship is fiercely contested, the other drivers play a bigger role in determining the outcome than the WDC themselves.

Glock 2008
Petrov 2010 (cost Alonso the championship)
Massa 2010 (cost Hamilton the championship)
Toro Rossos 2012 (helped Vettel win)
Schumacher 2012 (helped Vettel win – points were not required but he didn’t know that)

I’m sure one of you can come up with a full list of assists or penalties in the history of F1 that have cost a driver the WDC.

He is considered to be the fastest driver on the grid though so I reckon with Mercedes behind him he will do well
