No, I don’t have “inside information” of any kind. I have common sense. All I know is that Pastor Maldonado is being considered for the drive because he brings $15 million in sponsorship from PDVSA. Williams are currently placed seventh in the World Championship, and even with the historical value multiplier that is applied from the television rights paid out to the teams at the end of the year (which is not nearly as significant as the ones paid to Ferrari and McLaren), they’re not going to be receiving that much from FOM. While the team probably won’t collapse if they keep Hulkenberg in the seat, there is a danger that they will. They will have less of a budget for developing the FW33 over the course of next year, which will hurt them. They’re also said to be losing four sponsors – the AT&T title sposorship deal ends this year, RBS have made their intentions to depart known for some time, AirAsia is expected to join Team Lotus full time next season and Phillips are said to be on the way out. Together, they are Williams’ four biggest sponsors, and with no cash flowing into the team and a low payout from FOM, they’re going to need a pay driver. So unless Felipe Massa can bring sponsors to the team, he is not an option for them. While he could probably do with getting out of the toxic Ferrari environment, there is nowhere for him to go. His name hasn’t been mentioned in conjunction with the Williams seat at all this silly season. It’s either going to be Pastor Maldonado or Nico Hulkenberg.
