Obviously Massa doesn’t deserve the seat just because he got one podium.
The danger for a young driver in going to Ferrari for a year is that they may not get another competitive seat for 2014. So, what if Ferrari get either Ricciardo or Vergne for a year, then swap with Vettel at the end of next year?

@prisoner-monkeys and all the others, I don’t feel Felipe Massa deserves to be in a top team at all. I just feel that under the current conditions and his recent gain in form, he might be the ideal driver for Ferrari, for a single season.
So when I say he deserves it, I take the current conditions into account. From Ferrari’s point of view, they would start to think about the possibility of watching and maybe keeping him.
But I believe Ferrari has already told Massa he won’t get a new contract.

If he can continue to perform like he did in Japan, and take points off some of Alonso’s rivals, such as the Mclaren drivers and Webber, then yes, he does. But he’s been far too inconsistent this season.

They have said they won’t take up the option on his existing contract. That does not mean they cannot offer him a new one.

I agree with Keith. It looks like Ferrari have rather been looking for excuses to keep Massa instead of trying to hire the best driver available. Massa’s performance has undoubtedly improved a lot over the last races but I’m pretty sure that Paul di Resta or Nico Hulkenberg would be able to get more out of the car, particularly in the qualifying.

Massa is doing well. I think it’s great that Ferrari gave him a chance to prove himself and that Massa has taken up the gauntlet and got the results expected of him. Good job Felipe!
