As much as I like the chrome, I think they should divert away from it as it’s Mercedes’ colour. Although Ron Dennis has said before his favourite colour is grey, which I’m assuming silver and chrome are included. (I think he said it in a documentary about the MTC)
I think the change in livery will happen around the time that McLaren stop using Mercedes engines. If they end up making their own engines then it might be sponsor oriented, who knows what sponsor they will have then!
Orange, actually called papaya (from the McLaren F1 book Driving Ambition), I don’t think will be used anytime soon. Unless they swap Vodafone for Orange, which is feasible as Orange are a massive company and have joined with T-Mobile to create the largest service provider.
That old style red and white livery looks amazing! I don’t think that will ever be used though, that era is gone and it’s not McLaren style to look back. Although I feel the papaya colour could be an exeption as it was Bruce’s colour.
My personal favourite would be to replace the chrome with a type of black, with a reflective quality (someone already mentioned).
Finally, I think it’s a bit strange if McLaren are keeping chrome because they have Mercedes engines. Maybe there has been some sort of deal, a la BMW Sauber.
Imagine it another way, if a team were partners with Ferrari and made their car mostly red, then split with Ferrari but still had Ferrari engines. How long should the customer keep the red of the main team.
