When pre-season testing started, there were concerns that Mercedes along with Mclaren were not as quick as Red Bull and Ferrari.

But after final test in Barcelona, it was clear Mercedes made progress.

Then Brawn came up with something like Schumacher will surprise people- https://www.racefans.net/2011/03/22/schumacher-surprise-2011-brawn/

But Schumacher went on to say that Mercedes was not as quick as in final test and will not be challenging for title and wins- https://www.racefans.net/2011/03/23/schumacher-mercedes-ready-fight-championship/

Then they come up more rubbish- http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90118

Now Schumacher thinks they now be the car most likely to challenge Red Bull at the front.

So whats the deal, is their car good or just Schumacher trying to keep hope of fans alive?

Honestly, I think they do not know where they stand. They probably think that Red Bull and Ferrari are sandbagging a little, that is why they do not want to make any bold statements, but they do not want to project the car as a disaster either. Hence the confusion.

It’ll be interesting to see but my guess is that Merc did improve, but have now been jumped by McLaren. If I’m wrong, I still can’t see Merc being up there with the Red Bulls.

Looks like Merc may be trying a different setup to most cars too; I’m pretty sure the commentators said the Mercs were over 10km/h faster through the speed trap than the next closest in practice 1 (correct me if I’m wrong).

If this is still the case on Sunday, with KERS and DRS, it should make them competitive overtakers.

Today’s times are not saying much anyway. It will be important to see how the car can handle the new tyres over the course of a race.

The fastest car on saturday !might have ruined the set just after 5 laps and then that’s it. So it IS definitely hard to say where any team stands.
