What if it actually does what Newey says. Maybe the air goes through the cockpit and then flows over certain parts of the car and creating an aero advantage.

It sure is an ugly solution, and i don’t think it’s purely for driver comfort. I guess we’ll know after the first couple of races, just like last year when they revealed they were running a small KERS unit.

@Me4me to be fair they never confirmed that. That stayed as paddock speculation with no concrete evidence.

It’s possible what you say though.

I’m pretty sure that driver cooling has never been an issue in previous years for Red Bull, so I honestly do not see the vent as solution for a problem that never existed.

I’m pretty sure that it is directing the air somewhere for an aero advantage, and I doubt it will be revealed up until the last pre season test.

@Todfod the initial contention was that the normal hole at the tip of the nosecone like this one:

@Todfod I agree with you… That is what I was trying to say earlier…. there is no way that slot is for cooling purposes… it MUST have something to do with aerodynamics… Newey is a tricky dude! They took his blown diffuser away so no he has to compensate for its loss and low and behold…. the slot appears! Something is fishy about it and it´ll be known in due time!

@Jack22 some of it might be for cooling. I just don’t believe it’s ALL for cooling.

Yeah, there is no way that it is just for cooling. After all, why woud he offer up that sort of information so freely, this is the man who put stickers on the RB6 to try hide it’s low blowing exhausts when they first made an appearance!

@ramondu999 geez…. then I guess every other driver in the grid must be “peachy” onboard their rides and don´t bother asking for extra cooling openings..! Seriously man…

One would have to be IGNORANT to believe it´s just for cooling purposes… and even more so on the car designed by the F1 designer guru…. Pack it any which way you like and chage the colors also.. I still ain´t buying it….

@Jack22 see the picture just above your post? That actually IS for cooling – and it’s disappeared off the Red Bull this year. I’m saying one of the purposes could be cooling.

@raymondu999 again… then I just guess every other driver on the grid is “PEACHY” in their car… Mercedes had that same opening as the Toro Rosso and accepted that they where trying to use that air for the front wing… so… yeah… let´s leave it at that…

  • Profile picture of raymondu999 raymondu999 said 1 year, 3 months ago:

The Mercedes had 2 versions of the hole – one was bigger and there was a separating element inside. In that variant – one side of the split went into the front wing and the other side went into the cockpit for cooling.

In the other variant with no split; the air all went into cooling.

@raymondu999 hell… who needs Ross Brawn…. take his place!! jajjajja seems to me you know more of what it actually did than him!

Like I said – I have thousands of photos of each car, showing all the updates.

Also it’s a common misconception that Ross is an aero/design person. He’s not. And he’ll probably know a LOT more than myself – I just see the small details
