“This has been a great season for Nelson Piquet, as he is now known, and always has been”
25th June 2012, 19:02 at 7:02 pm #203986bag0ParticipantHere in hungary, we had an interesting commentator, these are my favs from him:
– “Has anybody ever seen Raikkönens teeth?”
– “Maybe McLaren invented a racing car”
– “While his brother is racing, Ralph has to mowe the lawn”
– “And now the red flags are starting to light up, I mean lights”25th June 2012, 19:39 at 7:39 pm #203987the_sigmanParticipant@bag0 Do you talk about Palik Laszlo?

Martin HavenHere in Greece there is a commentator who is shouting all the time. At Valencia he was shouting even at the HRT-Pic scrap
26th June 2012, 7:00 at 7:00 am #203991raymondu999ParticipantJonathan Legard’s commentary is also funny. In a bad way.
26th June 2012, 7:14 at 7:14 am #203992the_sigmanParticipant26th June 2012, 8:30 at 8:30 am #203993Keith CollantineKeymasterI really don’t see why some people have it in for Legard. I genuinely don’t have a clue what you’re objecting to in that clip.
A bit worrying considering I’m going to be doing some TV commentating myself soon in the near future (details later!)
26th June 2012, 9:04 at 9:04 am #203994raymondu999Participant@keithcollantine I can’t speak for anyone else, but my personal issue with Legard is I think down to his history as a radio commentator. I feel personally he plays Captain Obvious way too much, for example saying things as they are obviously happening, like when Webber spun in Korea 2010. It was something like:
*Webber runs wide onto the kerb*
“Webber’s gone wide!”
*Webber starts spinning out*
“Webber’s starting to spin! Oh he has spun!”
*Webber near the wall*
“Webber could hit the wall there! He has hit the wall”And so the story goes.
He also has a bad habit of talking about irrelevant issues when action is going on. I remember Suzuka (either 2009 or 2010) as an overtake was happening he was talking about how Kubica and Alonso were great poker buddies.
Also he has some small mistakes – like when the rear wing off Trulli failed in Abu Dhabi 2010, he was saying how Trulli had a front wing failure. And somehow (that same race) Kubica going up the inside of Sutil was somehow Liuzzi going around the outside of Petrov, despite Liuzzi being out of the race.
Mind you there are a few funny errors – such as Brazil 2010, when “Alonso goes past Nico Hulkencurve!” which I genuinely didn’t mind.
And I should also say that he does have commentary qualities, which were probably especially useful for radio. He has a way (in my opinion) of really getting the audience excited. I loved that. It actually made (in some instances) for more exciting viewing, IMO
Please don’t keep us in the dark (for long) Keith! Would love to hear more about it. Is it a one-off, guest appearance thing? Or is it going to be a season-long regular gig? I presume you’ll take the role of the expert summariser rather than the commentary anchor?
26th June 2012, 9:11 at 9:11 am #203995raymondu999Participant@F1Yankee I love Hobbs’ accent, though not so much in commentary.
I remember when he was commentating Vettel’s 2009 or 2010 China pole lap in Speed’s usual “BMW track analysis.” I laugh every time Vettel goes through Turn 1. Hobbs was, in his usual accent, “and he goes right right right right right” – the way he just said right was epic.
26th June 2012, 9:32 at 9:32 am #203996the_sigmanParticipant@keithcollantine I want to show you that you can’t understand easily what he says
