I thought I had it with ‘retired on lap 1 in Melbourne’, but Trulli didn’t do that :/

You’re heading in the right direction. You just need to need to think outside the box a little.

Bloody hell, that’s a tough one. Spent a lot of time and I can’t think of anything really…

I’ve also thought hard about this, and I can’t come up with it. I probably could, if I had the time and motivation to go through all the Wikipedia pages for the last four year’s races, but I don’t. Would it be too much of a clue if you told us which race the events in question took place, PM?

Has it got something to do with losing positions on the opening lap?

@enigma – Of course it’s hard. I’m the one asking the question. If you were in the trivia quiz thread, you would have seen that I was challenging people to find some very obscure information, like the time Jody Schekter’s brother Ian was denied entry to Japan. This isn’t as obscure (I hope), but the key to the question is to think outside the box. If you can do that, you can get it in about five minutes because you’ll know exactly where to look.

@estesark – It might be a bit too much of a give-away. So I’ll word it like this: it’s a particular race, but it’s not a particular Grand Prix.

@beardfacef1 – I’m afraid you’re wrong, but you are heading in the right direction.

all i got is 2008 webber retired in melbourne, 2009 kovalainen retired in melbourne, 2010 hulkenberg retired in melbourne and 2011 truilli finished 13

    Nope, I’m afraid not.

Come on guys – these four races have something in common other than what Webber, Kovalainen, Hulkenberg and Trulli did in them. If you work out what that something is, you will work out what the drivers did.

I thought of these but couldn’t find any connection: first race of the season, last race of the season, penultimate race of the season, the race where the championship was decided, first wet race, the race at the new track, the first race of the season where someone retired from the lead…

I was first thinking about worst race finish for a polesitter but then I remembered Massa’s and Hamilton’s races in Singapore and Fuji 2008 so have to think something else.

Races where a man wearing a yellow coat was sitting in seat 34B of the main grandstand. All four drivers gave him a ‘suggestive’ wink.

    I think it’s my turn now…

I thought at first it was the fact that in the past 3 races at melbourne (excluding 2011) they all retired on the first lap webber 2008, Kovalainen 2009 and Hulkenberg and Trulli in 2010 and that the accedents created the safetycars but im not too sure this is right.

@enigma – you were right on the money … and then you went straight past it. The four races do have a connection, and it is one of the ones you just mentioned.

In 2010 they all retired in a race where the leader also retired?

At the first race at a brand new track in the last four season’s each of the drivers has finished the race one place higher than they qualified.

    Valencia 08- Kovalainen, 5th to 4th
    Abu Dhabi 09- Webber, 3rd to 2nd
    Korea 10- Hulkenberg, 11th to 10th
    India 11- Trulli, 20th to 19th
