Pirelli text is going to be with different colouring in all tyres. red-white-blue-yellow from supersoft to hard.

Do you have a source for that? And this doesn’t really help when we’re over-looking the cock-pit :)

In light of Lewis’ comments in the past 24 hours…do McLaren have more of a problem than anyone else?

I think it’s too early to say with regards McLaren in paricular, They are only now starting to put together and real strings of laps. The Ferrari and Redbull seem pretty good though.

In Answer to the question re why we go testing in Spain, it is because it is as far south (Hence warm) as the teams can go whilst staying in Europe which they try to do for cost reasons.

Think they would have liked to go to Bahrain this year for the benefit of knowing a little more about the tyres so it could be interesting when we get to some warmer climates this year.

I wish they’d go to Monza instead, or is it colder in Italy?

Monza is further north than Barcelona so I guess it’s a little cooler. Plus I wouldn’t think it offers enough variables worth testing.

Yep, I’m about 6 hours from Monza and it’s around 0 (celsius) here, shouldn’t be much different there I reckon.

Very good article on JA.F1 comparing tyre drop off this year with last year:

(I would post the link but for some reason it won’t let me – go to James Allen’s blog)

Seems like we’re back to the “good old days”. If tyre degradation defines laptimes as opposed to fuel load, we could see last minute dashes for soft tyres again.

We really won’t know anything until Melbourne. The Bridgestones didn’t like the cold either. I do expect the Pirellis to have these general trends, but less severe.

The one thing from the new Hamilton interview that worried me was about going slowly to preserve the tyres. If you aren’t able to do the opposite, go faster but have to make one more pit stop overall, because that will leave you 12 (or whatever) seconds short, then this is an area where Pirelli have boobed.

  • Profile picture of Asanator Asanator said 2 years, 2 months ago:

a driver may be 12 secs short when he exits the pits, but the point it that he will then be lapping much faster on fresh rubber than a car on older tyres and that is where most of the gain will be, not in the pre-stop stage.

In theory with the adjustable wing, a driver will have more opportunity to make use of fresh rubber. My prediction is that this will favour drivers aggressive drivers like Alonso, Hamilton and less so the smooth and steady Button.

No, I meant 12 seconds per race slower because of having to pit but the new tyres not having enough life to eat up that gap again.

Its a good point Icthyes, although the tyres look to drop off so much once they are gone.

However taking your point, the guy who can squeeze an extra lap out of a set could have an advantage. Although I think the ability to overtake will be a decider as with only a dozen or so laps to play with you cannot afford to waste any behind an out of position slower car.

This means we can expect to see lots of action after a short safety car period in which the front runners did not have the chance to pit, but some quite handy mid fielders did.

600m is not enough for the wing to make any appreciable difference and I suspect not actually change much when it comes to overtaking. I suspect there will be more gains made on that front by the single diffuser causing less turbulent wake from the car in front. I can’t see it favouring any driver in particular.
