Pirelli P-Zero's degradation (33 posts)

I was shouted down by people cleverer than I for suggesting the DDD contributes more to the wake than the SDD, so I’m not sure about that.

Good point HR, people who can overtake better will also be able to spend less time with their tyres suffering because they have to follow another car. And Safety Car restarts with some guys on new rubber would be awesome, we could see some very interesting strategies, e.g. you’re in 2nd, pit and drop to 4th but rocket to 1st on your new tyres!

During the Williams launch today, either Sam Michael or the other guy mentioned that Pirelli released information to all the teams about what teams had used what compound throughout the day. I’ve had a quick look around on the net and I can’t find anything available to the public. Just thinking that although degradation is high, alot of that is down to temperature, or lack of and is only really noteworthy in the grand scheme of things when teams are making comparison based on all using the same compounds.

Basically what i’m getting at is that track position and overtaking are two different things and are we getting excited where we shouldn’t be? Will team mates willingly move aside? Will midfield teams feel they have to move aside if it’s not skill but degradation holding them back? I guess you could argue that skill is knowing how to use your tyres as much as anything else…i’m just curious.

Yes the DD produces a more turbulent wake than the SD, which is why the new aero regs for 2009 didn’t provide the big help with overtaking that it was supposed to, a lot of the effect of the cars having cleaner lines was to produce a less turbulent wake which was largely negated by the DD.

It is another reason why the introduction of a Moveable Rear Wing this season is a bit premature as we have yet to see the cars running close together as they were designed to. Although it has to be said, I don’t know quite how having these blown diffusers etc has effected the wake if at all.
