I was just reading a BBC article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/21016926) and it mentioned that Mercedes already have a 2014 spec engine running and that they’ve play a recording of it doing a simulated Monza run to the press, also mentioned in this one (http://www.yallaf1.com/2013/01/13/mercedes-f1-turbo-engine-breaks-cover-and-it-sounds-sweet/)

Does anyone know if the recording was published anywhere?

No – journalists had to leave their dictaphones and mobile phones behind when they were played the audio, and as far as I’m aware Mercedes haven’t published it.

I understand why they did it. Things are so advanced right now that teams can get to know what other are doing with their engines just by analysing the sound. I remember Red Bull were seen at Jerez last year recording the exhaust sound of various cars at the end of the pit lane. If any team got hold of a recording of the sound of the engine, it seems they would know what Mercedes is doing with the engine right away.
