Sebastian Vettel: a good boy or not? (26 posts)

I do have to say, I don’t mind any of the temper tantrums shown in the videos above, but I was really displeased with his attitude after the Karthikeyan incident, where he thoroughly believed he did absolutely nothing wrong, when he could have admitted that he could have given more room and that he shouldn’t have acted out like that.

    @necrodethmortem
Weeeell.. Technically he did nothing wrong.

Maybe the reason why I’m not a Vettel fan is that I’ve always found it hard to understand the contrast between the great, mature and intelligent racing driver that he undoubtedly is and the person that tells primitive jokes and complains about ‘cucumbers’, ‘idiots’ or safety cars. But I think that he is neither good nor bad, he just is who he is and, as Klaus Wowereit, the Mayor of Berlin, once famously said, ‘das ist auch gut so’ (that’s a good thing).

@mads Indeed, technically he did nothing wrong, but there was no need to squeeze so hard and his comments afterwards were uncalled for and certainly warranted an apology after having had one week to reflect on them. This had nothing to do with not being a politically correct marketing droid, his actions were shameful and a matured man would know he did wrong.

Anyways, I expressed my opinion on the matter back then and there’s no need to have the discussion all over again here.

I don’t think Vettel is any more selfish, determined, demanding or aggressive than any of the top drivers. Although I didn’t appreciate the team bashing we saw in the Hungary 2011 video. So no, he’s not bad but he’s also not the modestly witty, self-effacing young man that some of the media would have had us believe by the end of last season.

You wouldn’t want to be near me when I lose a match at FIFA! It is normal to lose your temper sometimes, and some of us lose it easier than others. This doesn’t mean that I approve Vettel’s behaviour, I find it a bit exagerated, but I do understand him.

Am I meant to be shocked by this footage?! I’m not. He’s a competitive sportsman and that’s all you can say about it.

I’ll post my views on this and leave, lest the thread develop (as I’ve seen so many times) into verbal warfare amongst the anti- and pro- camps for the driver in question. Said driver is a competitive beast. They all want to win. As do all the other drivers.

It’s not a “you know what – it’d be nice to win.” They’re all doing their best to put themselves as high up as possible, so that they can capitalise on whatever comes their way. Even Kovalainen, I guarantee you – would be pushing. It’s not likely that the 18 cars ahead of him retire, but it’s a possibility, no matter however remote. And when that happens, Kovalainen wants to be in P19.

He’s been doing the cardiac equivalent of a 90-minute sprint race. Say you lost the race only by 0.1s behind the winner – and you know that you had a bad launch as you missed the starting shot. You will, naturally, be unceremoniously p*ssed off.

Heck even in life that happens.

Personally I think it’s actually a good thing. I have a similar sort of “throw toys out of pram” mentality when I don’t come in first place and frankly I put down a lot of what I have achieved in life down to this. I’m never willing to accept being 2nd best, and it pisses me off to no end if I do. I don’t mind showing it, either.

Just as long as you channel it to a source of motivation, you’ll do fine.

Right. I’ll be off now. Have fun!

To those saying other drivers are also angry on track: that doesn’t mean Vettel is a good person, the other driver could be bad too.
I think it’s pretty understandable to see a driver frustrated about retiring from a race, especially when he was in the lead. He thought it was Webber’s fault in Turkey 2010 so it’s acceptable, Kubica pushed him off track at Belgium 2010 so it’s acceptable, the car broke down in Valencia 2012 so it’s acceptable.
I think, with every driver, except maybe one or two, the agonism of the racing, the amount of efforts put in the Grands Prix and the importance of achieving a good result put the driver in a difficult situation: when something goes wrong, they’re obviously unhappy.
Depending also on whether you’re racing to win or in an HRT.

Vettel only tends to complain or come across as annoyed when he’s had some sort of race-ending incident. That’s pretty good as far as I’m concerned!

Oh and he called Karthikeyan a cucumber for goodness sake! You don’t get less aggressive than that!
