Pastor also has the benefit of his own car on every free practice session.

If Senna is so poor that he needs the car for all sessions just to get a decent result, he has no place in Formula 1.

@dot_com Grosjean has a 2013 Enstone contract – Kimi and Enstone have a 2013 option based on requirements from both ends. At least that’s how I understand the current situation

PM, I’m not saying that Senna’s performance is where it should be, I’m just saying that Maldonado has an advantage in that respect, and this is probably hurting his chances in quali. Any driver that has to sit out FP 1 or 2 goes into qualifying with a bit of extra work to do.

Pastor also has the benefit of his own car on every free practice session. I’m not saying that Senna is great, but you kind of feel like the odds are stacked against him a bit. I really feel like if he can sort his qualifying out then his races will start to get much better.

Senna had his car for free practice in Australia, Monaco, and Canada.

Australia – Bruno was fighting with Massa while Pastor was fighting with Alonso. Nuff’ said.
Monaco – He was outqualified by 5 positions, but MAD-onaldo had a pretty crappy weekend himself there.
Canada – He was nowhere near Maldonado all weekend.

I understand to why some love Bruno, as he’s the nephew of the great Ayrton Senna. Sadly, I’m afraid that he’s simply not as good as his uncle. Although I certainly don’t think it’s because he’s lacking talent, but rather his lack of experience. Missing out on racing between the age of 10 to 21 is a massive development range. I firmly believe that if his career didn’t come to a halt, he’d be at the same level as Ayrton right now.

Actually, I know for a fact that if it weren’t for his decade-long departure from racing, he’d be amongst the best drivers on the grid. I can prove it with reasonable judgement too. :P

Albeit having less points Bruno has erned his points over a spread of races, Pastor earned his 29 through to races and a win, to me that shows him the weaker driver as he could only hook the car up for points three times, even though he did a great job to get the win.

Sorry, but I don’t buy that theory. Senna has never shown any flashes of promise. He can’t even get into Q3. He’s there because of his money, and he only has that money because of his name. If he was Bruno Jones, sponsors wouldn’t bother with him. It was the same in 2011 – Renault needed the money, so they dropped Heidfeld for Senna, and he proved to be equally-useless. The one time he beat Vitaly Petrov was in Singapore, and that was the team’s worst performance of the year. While at Renault, he tended to go backwards in the races, threw away points positions with penalties for avoidable incidents, and in the races that they both finished, Petrov finished – on average – four places higher than Senna.

I might be a Vitaly Petrov fan, but I’m willing to admit that he’s not highly-rated in the paddock. Neither is Maldonado highly-rated. Senna was beaten by Petrov, and he’s being beaten by Maldonado. The sooner Williams get rid of him, the better.

To be fair, pace-wise Maldonado commands a high rating and IMO rightly so. Malders is a bonehead and has too many crashes to be a top driver, but speed is never the issue – a bit like Webber pre-2009. Fast but inconsistent.

Vijay Mallya hints at a future race seat for Jules Bianchi.

Talking about a silly 2012 season, ya know what’ll really be silly? Hamilton to Lotus, Raikkonen to Mercedes and Schumacher to McLaren.

I love the way people seem to think that Hamilton can just walk into whatever team he wants to and get a drive there, regardless of who is already racing for them. Case in point, Lotus. The team appear to be very happy with both Raikkonen (even after his Monaco nonsense) and Grosjean. Why would they give up on both those drivers for the sake of Lewis Hamilton?

@prisoner-monkeys re: Bianchi, that’s been a tradition hasn’t it? Their test drivers since Liuzzi have all been awarded race drives the following year.

It would be extremely interesting to see how that plays out if Bianchi is still part of the FDA. Is he? Does anyone know?

  • Profile picture of Prisoner Monkeys Prisoner Monkeys said 10 months, 2 weeks ago:

I believe he’s a part of the FDA, but I don’t know of anything that specifically says an FDA driver must race for a Ferrari-powered team. And even if there is, it’s entirely possible that Ferrari will convince Force India to switch to Ferrari engines for 2014.

What I find most interesting is that it means di Resta or Hulkenberg will be moving on. I don’t believe the talk of di Resta moving to McLaren, though I am willing to entertain the idea of him moving to Mercedes. But if I were Vijay Mallya and I had to get rid of one of my drivers for the sake of Bianchi, I’d do everything in my power to keep the better-performing driver – in this case, Paul di Resta.

Obviously everything rests on Schumacher and whether he retires or not. If he does, di Resta could go to Mercedes, or Hamilton could and one of the Force India drivers could replace him which will open the door for Bianchi.
Bianchi is the best of the young drivers, so he deserves a seat in F1 ahead of everyone else in GP2 and WSR. It will be interesting to see how he goes because he is very talented.

I think so much of the driver market is hinging on Schumachers next move. Personally I think he will call it a day at the end of this season, but I think I might have said that for the past three seasons. Hamilton says he knows where he will be next year – has he mentioned when he will make that news public?

I don’t recall him saying anything like this.

However, he did say that he is in no hurry to sort out his contract, and will wait until the end of the season before signing anything if he feels it is the right thing to do.
