    @icthyes

    Surprised to see so many minor quibbles posted, guess I just don’t care about those things.

    Like I said, I think people had already decided they didn’t like Sky, and so went looking for things to criticise.

    @toro-stevo

    Question for Aussies, I missed it if they mentioned it during the coverage – I assume we’re getting the sky feed for all the races this year? Or are they going to grab the beeb for their half of the races?

    Sky, for every qualifying session and race, but no practice sessions except Melbourne. They’re not jumping back and forth (I’m pretty sure broadcasters cannot get their feed from anyone but Sky; it was like this with the BBC last year, because the money from television rights ultimately goes to the teams, and if it’s being paid to the BBC instead of FOM, it’s not going to the teams). They’re also broadcasting every European round live on Channel Ten (in addition to ONE HD) instead of on a delayed broadcast.

    Like everyone, I hate the fact that F1 has now gone to Pay TV. But I don’t blame Sky for taking the opportunity when offered it. I started watching totally impartial.

    As far as I’m concerned, Martin Brundle is amazing. BUT that doesn’t detract from the fact that Sky’s coverage included absolutely zero proper analysis and the whole programme is presented in a stuffy, dull manner that’s worlds away from what the BBC produced last year.

    After watching the race today, I’ll happily concede that I may have been a little too quick to put Sky’s coverage down. It was by no means as good as the BBC coverage last year, but I think it’s a case of taking time to settle in.

    Having watched all of Skys coverage this morning and only 7 minutes of the BBCs highlights so far…Sky have a lot of work to do…but let’s give them time.

    F1 has got the “sky sports experience” a presenter without a clue, pointless graphics, little content and Adverts

    My verdict after this weekend is that I’ll be watching the BBC when they have live races, I watched the Sky coverage until 9am and I can’t really say I learnt anything more in that time. No analysis and they finished before McLaren had done their celebration photo which is something the BBC wouldn’t have done.

    The commentary team did a great job. Crofty made a few mistakes, but nothing major. Having listened to him for the last few years I know he is better. I thought the Croft and Brundle partnership worked better than the Brundle and DC team of last year.

    The pre and post show Sky coverage was pretty average. It was dull in places and pointless in others. It felt very stuffy. I’m not sure the Sky Sports football approach works for F1. Anthony Davidson is wasted in his current role.

    People above have mentioned that posters are being baised towards the BBC at anger of F1 moving to Sky, but I see it the other way. I think the BBC screwed us over and Sky just did what any company would do. The BBC’s coverage is well ahead at the moment.

    In time I hope Sky can catch up.

    I’m confused. In what way was the BBC Coverage last year good? Can someone explain it to me because I generally thought it was repetitive basic stuff :/ IDK, maybe I just didn’t warm to Jake, EJ and DC.

    I felt today’s coverage was better, although some of the same problems remained. Both Lazenby and Hill were better, and there was more of a focus on what was actually happening that weekend. Features may be nice, but a little goes a long way. I also maintain that the SkyBox is a fundamentally good idea, but I would have Anthony Davidson as another pundit and have the big screen with the main action, as everyone would be able to take part.

    It’s certainly different to the BBC’s coverage, not least because its got a more serious tone overall, but the niggles I have are mostly ones which can be fixed down the line. I’ll admit I wasn’t able to watch much of the post-race analysis, but it seemed decent enough. Again, Sky have the money and willingness to listen to fix any issues. Brundle also seemed a little more able to let Crofty talk, which was nice, and was excellent as always in the box.

    Will I watch the BBC’s live coverage? Maybe, but I’ll probably stick to the Sky commentary. As much as I am a fan of Ben Edwards, that Croft/Brundle combination is a winner in my books. Overall, it’s an 8/10 from me, but it’s certainly worth watching.

    I really enjoyed the commentary on Sky, but if I am completely honest, watching the highlights on the BBC now, I don’t see what they have cut out, currently lap 32, and they seem to have shown all 32, so it feels just like a rerun, but I think the European races are different with shorter highlights

    Lin1876: The seriousness of Sky’s coverage is probably why I like it more. I don’t want to see HAM + BUT Singing Oasis in a pub, I just want to see the racing.

    @matthers Maybe after the criticism of lack of content yesterday they have had to cut down on features and focus on the racing in order to keep the ratings up, I noticed the same but then again more features means less Gary Anderson and Ben Edwards, at least something good comes out of it.

  • Profile picture of Mathers Mathers said 1 year, 3 months ago:

    I find Ben Edwards really good, and I enjoyed his BTCC commentary @formula-1, and Gary Anderson seems quite good in his role, and the fact they are highlights are the only problem, as in the European races, they will be on in the evening, so it just won’t be right

    @John_Bergqvist

    The seriousness of Sky’s coverage is probably why I like it more. I don’t want to see HAM + BUT Singing Oasis in a pub, I just want to see the racing.

    I understand how some people, such as yourself, prefer the more serious demeanour of Sky’s coverage. I see how some people dislike Eddie or prefer Simon to Jake. I even accept that some people prefer the Brundle-DC partnership to Brundle and DC, although I must admit that this totally baffles me.

    But what no one can deny is Sky’s total lack of post-race analysis. All we got was a 30 second montage- no commentary, no explanation. That’s not analysis, that’s not even “highlights”.

    Sky have gone to all the effort of kitting out some posh “SkyPad” with an enormous touchscreen TV, and for what? It was used once during the entire post-race period to show us the start. That’s all the “analysis” we got.

    BBC maybe light-hearted and spend a lot of time joking around and teasing Eddie about his shirts, but their post-race analysis was brilliant last year, and I fully expect it to be just as good this year.

    Pretty disappointed with the Sky coverage to be honest. The race itself was fine, but Sky had little to do with that as it was just the feed provided to them (although the extra bits on the red button are a nice addition). However, the post-race analysis was terrible, and that’s the bit they really need to get right in my opinion.
    They spent so much time talking about Mclaren, barely mentioned the mid-field battles and didn’t touch on the last lap. Very poor.
