In case anyone’s confused, @Enigma‘s referring to the fact that Jochen Rindt was sadly killed before he clinched the world championship.

@enigma Yeah I noticed that when it was on, not really the best choice of words by sky…

I think the sky coverage was fine, although I did notice that there was a lot of time in the practice sessions when there was no commentary, normally in the bits between the actual running, I assume this was when the UK feed went to ads. And I don’t know whether you guys are aware of it or not but I think the UK is the only feed to get pre/post race coverage regardless of the broadcaster. In NZ we start as the cars are on the grid being prepped, and finish as soon as the podium interviews are finished. Whereas you get an extra 2hours + of coverage where you find out all sorts of extra information and interviews. You are actually really lucky

Here’s an extract from this link,

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/mar/19/sky-australian-grand-prix?newsfeed=true

    sponsors take note ;-)
More than a million viewers watched the climax to the first grand prix of the season on Sky’s new Formula 1 channel but its overall audience was down 75% on BBC1′s coverage last year.

Season opener the Australian Grand Prix, the first to be broadcast exclusively by Sky, had an average audience of 526,000 viewers between 4.30am and 9am on Sunday, with a five-minute peak of 1.02 million as Jenson Button took the chequered flag.

Live coverage of the race itself, which ran from 6am to 7.40am, was watched by an average of 874,000 viewers.

The BBC’s live coverage of the same race last season averaged 2.13 million viewers, a 51.1% share of the audience.

The Australian grand prix is traditionally one of the lower-rating F1 races because of the time difference. Sunday’s audience figures included viewers who recorded it and watched it later in the day – as did the BBC1 figures for 2011.

The BBC, which will broadcast half of this year’s grand prix live as part of its new joint rights deal with Sky, averaged 2.7 million viewers for its highlights programme between 2pm and 4pm on BBC1, a 22.9% share.

Sky’s audience was always going to be substantially down on last year’s free-to-air coverage. Sky’s dedicated F1 channel is available to subscribers to Sky Sports or Sky’s high definition channels.

A Sky Sports spokesman said the broadcaster did not discuss ratings for individual programmes.

He added: “It is the performance of the whole channel we are interested in. We are pleased with the launch of the channel overall.”

Hi and thanks to you all for posting
My own thoughts are as follows
Brunde & Croft an improvement on last year
Hill not biased like Coulthard (still on Red Bull payroll)
    Enjoyed the Friday night show
Agree that the Skypad and Davidson could be used more
    Overall enjoyed the Sky experience

I feel that Sky will develop this channel more as time goes by
They didn’t have a lot of time to add other motorsports
Remember the BBc still holds the franchise from F! and sublets to Sky

Heh. Just read a Jon Noble article about the weekend. Thought this was quite funny: apparently the uniforms the Williams team and the Sky TV team were wearing were very similar and causing a couple of confusions:

There were a few jokes going around too that, with Sky bringing along 81 staff to cover the weekend (which is more than many teams need to compete in the race), the move was simply a way of Williams getting around the personnel limit of 47 team members!

This Sky-BBC debate is getting so boring.
If I here someone say ‘I can’t watch F1 anymore because it’s gone to Sky’ I’ll scream.
10 races lives on the Beeb, 10 races with a lengthy highlights package. That’s still pretty good if you ask me.
I can remember about 15-20 years ago when the Beeb didn’t show every race live. From Brazil, for example, you’d only get 45 minutes of highlights – and they were the only people covering it!
The problem is, we’ve had it too good for too long.
Look the Premier League or the cricket – you have to pay for top-notch sport these days. Either deal with it or go home.
Or go to the race. I’m still in Aus having been to Melbourne and it was superb. I’ll be back just in time to watch Malaysia on the Beeb and I’m sure the coverage will be very good.
    Rant over.
    Thanks
    Mark

Does anyone else have problems with getting the Red Button service on Sky F1 HD? I can usually get it working by 2nd practice but before that it usually says there is an error with the sky card, second weekend in a row it has done this! And yes I have done the whole procedure of putting the card in and out of the slot, I have read on the sky forum that its a problem for many people!

I paid an extra tenner a month to watch the full season to have this muppet who knows nothing about f1 get all excited over nothing. I feel sorry for Martin to have to sit next to him!

Are you talking about David Croft or Simon Lazenby, @dan8495? If it’s David Croft, I have to say you are completely wrong to suggest he knows nothing about F1. I have never heard anybody with as much knowledge of the sport as he has. Ask him to tell you which three drivers stood on the podium in X race in Y year, and he’ll give you all three without fail. He might not have a driver’s understanding of it, but then very few do.

I just think he is a lot better on the radio, where there is no need for any periods of silence, than on TV.

Just watched Sky’s coverage for the first time today. Brundle was his usual good form, as was Croft. The rest of the team really seem like they’ve only been at it a week. Off the top of my head I remember that lady (don’t know their names yes) saying Jenson got pole, fastest lap and win at Melbourne, post-race she said Kimi started 5th, and I’m quite sure the main presenter mentioned to Monisha Kaltenborn about narrowly missing out on their first win, forgetting about Canada 2008.

Yeah I’ve just had that pointed out on Twitter.

Apologies to anyone who was misled.
