    I think they’ve done amazing job – really glad that I signed up for the new season. The actual on track coverage seems to be really – glad that David Croft has finally made the step up to TV as I thought the BBC made a huge mistake with their commentary box line up last year (although they were still infinitely better than Alan Partridge -er- Jonathan Legard).

    Off track I think is the biggest difference – the build up has been brilliant, if anything their access to drivers and team personnel seems even better than the BBC. And the “F1 show”, I think, is pretty awesome. Less patronising than the BBC’s output, which always seemed to be desperate to cater for the ‘casual viewers’. It was great getting an insight into the paddock late into the evening, which we’ve never really had before.

    Only downpoint, for me, is the horrendous opening sequence and the awful song. Desperately needs something a bit more pacey.

    Did anyone spot Jake Humphrey briefly in the background of one of the cutaways? I have to admit I felt a small pang of guilt.

    I think Sky’s been pretty good so far, some aspects are awesome like having an F1 channel with all the legends features and season reviews. The ads in practice annoyed me a wee bit but I liked the way the whole team seems to cover practice rather than on the Beeb where it was always an afterthought with radio commentary. I think the Skypad is pretty tacky but I guess it might come in handy in some race incidents, although I fear it might end up like footballll where the slow motion replays are over analysed. Ted is brilliant as always and I think he should present the ‘F1 show’ on his own as not only is he brilliantly informed but his style is so much more relaxed and easy to watch than Georgie Thompson, I’ve never understood why she is so highly rated by Sky. I’m reserving judgement on Lazemby, I thought he was less smug than Jake which I liked but I think he’s yet to get up to speed. Croft and Brundle worked fine, Croft has the right style for lead commentator even if he makes the occasional error as every commentator does.

    It feels very slick. Everything is more whizzy and fancy, but as others have said, it’s not a whole lot different to the coverage the BBC was offering. That is until you consider the HD televised practice coverage and ‘The F1 Show’. The insights with the teams on The F1 Show were really good – I hope they can keep it up for the whole of the season. Is it worth signing up to Sky for? Perhaps. But I’m going to keep using my local to watch the qualifying and races, and online streams to watch the practice sessions and The F1 Show. Perhaps when I have disposable income I’ll consider getting a Sky package.

    In terms of commentators, I have always liked David Croft, but Brundle is starting to grate on me every so slightly these days, probably because he’s everywhere now – on The F1 Show, in practice and in the pre-quali and race build-up. He’s still a good broadcaster, but he should remember he’s no longer the main commentator and let DC talk a little more. Overall, very much enjoying Sky thus far.

    Crofty and Ant davidson During FP and Crofty and M Brundle during Qualifying, Excellent. HD and Dolby is a real treat, it suits F1 very well. Not too bothered about the rest as spend more time reading twitter feeds taking the p*** out of everybody once on track action is over. Think Sky might have problems keeping the content interesting after a few races simply with so much airtime to fill (90 mins build up on Sunday, cant see that for every race) T Kravitz and N pinkham were great on 5-live but not so sure of their new roles. Still, first weekend and all that…..

    They’ve done a solid job so far, and they seem very willing to listen, which is certainly their best point. It looks like they’re trying to combine the best of both the BBC and ITV’s coverage, and the format works well, although there are a few too many features which are too insubstantial to get going. I’m also not convinced by the choice of Simon Lazenby as presenter and Damon Hill as pundit. I think Hill just lacks the charisma which both DC and Eddie Jordan have, and Lazenby is a little bit dry. It’s still the first race though, so I’ll cut them some slack. I’m sure they’ll grow into their roles over time.

    On a massive, massive flipside, the commentary is amazing. Croft/Brundle is a combination which I have been screaming for since the BBC gained the rights, and it’s exceeded expectations. Both are excellent commentators in their best roles at the prime of their careers, great job!

    The only Sky option I can use is Sky Go (monthly ticket). The stream was delayed by almost a minute this morning, so was out of synch with the official live timings (and the chat on this forum). Yesterday (practice sessions) it was between 30 seconds and 90 seconds – the variance was because I kept experimenting by stopping and starting it. I know it’s not my computer setup because parallel streams had no similar delays.
    Sky’s ads are misleading – the race control features are not available if you subscribe via the Sky Go monthly ticket. So for £35 a month I’m getting a vastly delayed stream, no extra features, and if I want to watch other Sky channels (generally I don’t) I don’t get the range that’s available if I had a Sky+HD TV package (for less money).
    I’m not interested in the commentary or any of the extras to be honest. I just want to be able to watch the on-track action in real time. The 1 minute delay is really throwing me off.
    I’m not sure if I’ll buy another monthly ticket. Sky’s customer support has been extremely poor and I don’t trust them to sort out any problems – their attitude so far has been to get rid of me as soon as possible and fob me off with time-wasting false information.

    Regarding content – at the moment I prefer last year’s BBC coverage. I’m not warming to the presenters and some of it has been cringe-makingly awful. But it’s early days and I’d be prepared to cut them some slack if the monthly go ticket provided value for money. At the moment it doesn’t, and Sky’s attitude to customer service makes me feel they won’t do anything to improve their offering.

    As many others have said, Georgie Thompson is unneeded, while Anthony Davidson is underused. He could do an equally good job with technical analysis on his own, and it would probably come across as more natural. I think he should become part of the main presenting trio instead of Damon Hill, who, as much as I liked him as a driver, is pretty dull as a pundit.

    The commentary pairing of Croft and Brundle has a very heavyweight feel to it. I think Brundle will take a while to settle back in to a second commentator’s role, having been the main man last season. I’m sure he realises that Croft is miles ahead of Legard, though.

    Early days.

    The Pros
    * Crofty/Davidson in FP1-3 commentry
    * Crofty/Brundle in Qualification commentry
    * Damon Hill providing excellent comments from the Paddock
    * Anthony Davidson’s analysis of pole laps
    * Ted Kravitz in the pits

    Negatives
    * Criminal under-use of Ant Davidson. Whilst I would never complain about being stuck in a room with Georgie Thompson, the guy needs to be put to more work. Have him with Damon in the Paddock giving feedback, if not stick him in the commentry!!
    * Who is this fella they’ve stuck with Damon. He likes to start a sentance with “Yeah” and is more interested in the fly-overs by the Red-Arrows (do the Aussies have them?) or a Tornado jetfighter. Jake was/is bad on BBC and Im sorry to really be negative about this, but he (whoever he is) is the weaklink so far.

    I really enjoyed BBC coverage, but Sky’s has been excellent so far. A few downsides, Damon Hill being most of them. The guy was boring when they used him in 2002, you’d think that they’d learn!

    I actually think it’s pretty good. Hill seems to be getting more stick than I expected because I thought he was pretty good, but I must say the whole Skypad thing with Georgie Thompson standing there nodding constantly seems slightly unnecessary, but it might be used to better effect when there are more on track incidents to actually analyse. Apart from that, it all felt pretty slick and nicely presented, Crofty and Brundle seemed pretty natural in the box and I also loved the interactive features, as it allowed me to catch quite a few incidents before the FOM feed showed them, thanks to the different onboard cameras.

    Overall, very impressed so far.

    @sjm

    Damon Hill providing excellent comments from the Paddock

    I just hope Hill’s “it’s alwys difficult to drive a Formula 1 car” isn’t going to become the new “this reminds me of when I was running Jordan” …
