Speed has been outbid for F1 coverage in the US (34 posts)

@bluestar77 I also only rarely watch that channel, so I’m not sure whether they’ve had any buildup. I *hate* the looks of that practice broadcast schedule, although they might be planning to show some practice sessions online, as Speed did.

Actually, come to think of it, Will Buxton commented on something a friend of mine wrote for Sidepodcast (was he Googling his name?), and he said, among other things, that they were going to be at testing in Barcelona. Did anyone see any evidence of NBC Sports having a team there?

Well here’s a sliver of good news – NBC Sports just started a twitter feed for their F1 coverage: @f1onnbcsports

According to Leigh Diffey on Twitter, they’re also having a preview show this Thursday:

It’s a half hour long, starting at 9:00 pm eastern.

Well, that’s something at least. Thanks for the heads-up, aka_robyn. I’m encouraged by the number of repeats that NBC is putting up, particularly during the day. Looking at Diffey’s tweets, it appears they’ve also got Matchett & Hobbs in some decent suits for once.

It appears that NBCSN is getting into F1 big with their broadcast schedule.

Countdown to F1 is a half-hour 2013 season preview show which will air 13 times between this coming Thursday & Wednesday the 13th.

AuGP FP1 is being shown 1 time (delayed right before FP2)
AuGP FP2 is being shown 2 times
AUGP Qualifying is being shown 4 times
AUGP is being shown 4 times.

There will be a half-hour pre-race show right before the live airing of the race & there will be a half-hour post-race show called F1 Extra that will air 4 times for the AuGP (after each broadcast of the race).

In addition to that NBCSN has picked up the rights to broadcast that Mobil1: The Grid show with it’s first airing being this Thursday right after the F1 Preview show.

Am I the only one angry at the fact I will now have to pay to watch F1? I most certainly will pay (unfortunately) but I thought Bernie was trying to build a fan base in the US. How does switching from a reputable station that carried F1 for 17 years to a clown outfit like NBCSN help the viewer base?

If you want to know how many people will be losing out this year while Bernie lines his already fat pockets then check this link and view the chart of PAY stations airing F1 now.

@mwdriskell – I suggest you do some more research before you make sweeping statements like this:

people will be losing out this year while Bernie lines his already fat pockets

Bernie does not actually see any of the money from the television broadcast arrangements. Rather, that money is put aside at the start of the year, and then divided up and paid to the teams as prize money once the championship is over.

I disagree. He made the decision to switch and I guarantee he could have done more research to the available broadcasting of races to help build the viewing base.
Honestly, I’m just mad that now I have to pay for something that has been free for so long.

@mwdriskell Wait, what? Free? Speed certainly wasn’t free! I guess I’m not particularly mad because I’m paying for the same cable TV I was before. In fact, I think more people I know get NBC Sports than Speed (a channel that is now going to be disappearing entirely).

Really? So, you were involved in the negotiation process, then? Or do you have direct access to any of the proposed offers he received? Or were you in a position to advise one or more of the interested parties?

If the answer to any of these question is “no”, then please stop to make out that you have some knowledge or access that the rest of us do not.

@prisoner-monkeys I think by the ‘I guarantee he could have done more research,’ what he means is I think he could have more research, but chose not to, maybe guarantee was the wrong word choice.

@aka_robyn ….just out of curiosity, do you happen to live in the US? Particularly southern states? What I meant by ‘FREE’ was Speed (in my area) is part of extended cable, unlike NBCSN which requires an upgraded cable package. It’s not really that big of a deal since I slept on it. I just got caught up in the moment from some posts in another forum and was fishing for other displeased fans about the new broadcasting changes.

@prisoner-monkeys ….I’m not trying to have a pissing contest here. I have no idea why Bernie does the things he does but I do question some of his decisions.
I wonder only, as I had posted previously to aka_robyn, how this broadcasting change will help F1 grow it’s fan base in the long run. Less fans? Less sponsors? Less money coming in? No more F1? I mean this to be a discussion, not an attack on Bernie so much.

    http://www.f1reader.com/news/no-investigation-into-bbc-sky-f1-deal-28566

“However, before Bernie Ecclestone, Martin Whitmarsh, Adam Parr and co start slapping themselves on the back, perhaps they should await the results of our survey. Currently, over 90% of those who have taken part say they have no intention of buying a subscription to Sky Sports next year, which is not going to go down well with sponsors.”

@aka_robyn / @prisoner-monkeys …… I guess we will wait and see the outcome

Well, I’ve got to be honest with you: I think you went about it in completely the wrong way, considering that you did absolutely no research on where money from the television rights actually goes, and then accused Bernie of not doing enough research on his target demographics.
