The most exciting laps (30 posts)

Good call Ratboy and Ned, two (three?) very different but nonetheless fantastic laps!

Sw6569 – what did Magnussen get a warning for? I’m not sure there’s much more he could have done when Bergmeister pushed him into the wall! I can only assume it was for the nudge on the last corner?

@Tom L Magnussen bumped into Bergmeister deliberately on the last corner which forced him slightly wide and unsettled the car – thats how he got such a run on him towards the start finish straight. As far as i’m aware thats something you might see more often in Touring cars than you would in endurance racing hence he was told off for it – as if he’d have won it would have been for that reason.

Its like the kind of thing you see on a computer game or something, really dirty driving!

    Montoya vs Andretti
ChampCars at Michigan … For those who think oval racing can’t be exciting.

I’d contend that Ned, Mika’s qualifying lap in 2000 round Imola was crazy, knife edge chucking it round the circuit, best quali lap i’ve seen this decade.

Incidentally, I seem to be disagreing with you a lot at the mo, no idea why, nothing malicious in it.

That was a great lap indeed Scribe. And the commentary makes it even better!

Because I’m a sucker for the Norschleife I love watching laps around it. And this one is one of my favourites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acSGbO0MGGI

I have to admit that, for a few seconds during the final couple of laps of Brazil 2008 GP, I thought my heart was going to explode.

But I think Dan Thorn made the best comment of this thread so far, Senna qualifying laps are amazing to watch.

    How about this one?

There was also an amazing onboard video of his qualifying lap at the ’89 Japanese GP on youtube but it has since disappeared, sadly.

Also, most opening laps at Spa are tremendously exciting. I sometimes wonder what the run down to Eau Rouge would be like if they moved the starting grid back to where it used to be, just after the La Source hairpin…

You mean last decade, Scribe ;-) (Yes, I remember the discussion at the end of the last decade!)

While we’re talking quali laps here’s a couple of Schumi’s best:

Austria 2003: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCLW-ijN0GQ Huge slide into turn two and he still goes quicker than Raikkonen through the sector!

Monaco 1996: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-X45KU2WMk&feature=related 0.7 secs in the final sector alone!

Oh, and here’s a great opening lap of an Elise race at Bathurst: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S-8fRyyzBg&feature=related Talk about a different class of driver…

Imola 05 in the closing stages.

Nurburgring 07 first few few laps then at the restart and then at the end when Massa’s suffered tyre vibrations.

Surprised no-one has said this but Spa 09 when Kimi passed Fisi and then waiting to see if Fisi could take control again.

Malaysia 09 when the track was flooded pretty much just before the red flag.

90 as soon as Alesi grabbed his chance and got around Senna in Pheonix and waiting to see if/when Senna would pass again.

Spa 98 first lap- crash. Wasn’t an exciting lap but an exciting few feet. Pretty horrifying at the time too watching it unfold http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e287pHZNUcs

Nurburgring 05 when Kimi was struggling and finally he was out.

For me it’s a toss up between Kubica vs Massa and Gilles vs Arnoux.

@Ned and Scribe both sensational.Mika’s wins it for me as that was just jaw dropping the entire time. Trulli’s absolutely blew my mind though as soon as he came out of the tunnel. he was so close to the wall then he flew round and the swimming pool was just gloriously insane. I could watch that little bit over and over again. I once read/listened to an interview with Jarno not too long back and he said the secret to qualifying was to keep a little bit back and not be on the limit but I’m sorry he was bonkers that lap. That was special. Sorry for the ramble.

A lot of great laps have been mentioned here already for F1, so outside of F1 I second MotoGP last year at Barcelona… those final laps were spell binding, more so if you were actually there and saw that final move with your own eyes. A moment I will never forget.

When I think of great scraps, I always remember Mansell & Fittipaldi dicing over 2nd position in Cart 1993 at Cleveland, that was brilliant. At work just now, so can’t check the link, but I think it is this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND8VCprPuAo

I like the Mika lap because you can clearly see he’s driving the car faster than it’s supposed to go, literally flat out, over the limit, an when the car attempts to spring back because he’s pushed it to far, he just holds it! Usually puffs of smoke means you’ve lost time but the lines he took ment he caried more speed than the car was actually capable of through the corners. He made nearly 2tenths on Schumacher in the last sector, maybe he saw his lap delta’s an thought what the hell.

Surely John Watson passing three cars on one lap at Detroit in 1982?

Martin Brundle’s charge in Detroit 1984 is also an awesome watch. Haven’t seen that clip Keith, you got a link?
