I see a lot of difference between Berger and Moss. As far as I’m aware, Berger was not as quick or good as his peers, and while Moss never quite got there, Berger didn’t ever come close to a championship.

You can’t blame Stirling Moss for not winning a championship. First of all he was up against Fangio for three years (the two of them were considered to be the quickest of all drivers), and when he finally had his chance he basically gaves his title away to Hawthorn out of modesty, though Moss had won two races more that year. Secondly, becoming World Champion was never Stirling Moss’s goal: he just wanted to prove his racing abality every single race – in itself it is an admirable strategy, but it doesn’t give you the championship. Third, you must also look at non-F1 races: just google the 1955 Mille Miglia.

Berger was as quick and good as most of his peers- sad for him some were named Senna and Prost…………… oh, and Piquet and Mansell. Maybe if he were born 7 years later he would be a 2 x WDC and the Schu just a 5x??

As for Sir Stirling Moss my comments were never meant, and I hope not taken, to be disrespetful- far from it. All I am saying I find it hard to have a guy at no. 1 of all time that has not been on top over a season- because thats what its all about.

As I have said I saw my first F1 race in 1986 and was hooked until Ayrton died in 1994. Saw a few years after but to be honest missed most F1 from 1997-2005 due to Senna’s death and the most boring F1 era EVER. I started watching most races but got really bored with the whole BS of F1! I have been back in a BIG way since 2007 an see F1 in its best shape- well- ever :) But I have read alot of F1 history (and still do now) and know more about the 70′s than the 10 years I was elsewhere.

So I know about Sir Stirling handing Hawthorn the chance for a title, see the respect he gave to a team leader (in a time where a driver could take their team-mates car if theirs failed) and while I respect
his decision, its not one made by a champion. He should have had that driver killer instict and taken hit title!!

@garns Don’t worry! :)

I think it has to do with personal perception: some people appreciate drivers that have set their mind on winning the championship, others have more appreciation for a driver that try to win as many GPs as possible. There is a fundamental difference between the two and neither of the two is a bad mentality.

andae23- good point and cheers. I guess the drive that Senna had to always be the best at all cost was what I always loved about him- the same “smug’ attitude that I dont care much for with Seb in the current field!! If it were Webber my opionion would no doubt be a little different haha.
