I agree that no circuit that hosts a Grand Prix should be used for testing. I’d argue that Barcelona might be slightly more interesting if the teams hadn’t already run their cars there a few months previously and already got their setups pretty much tuned in beforehand.

That said, my vote would go for Motorland as well as it looks like a fantastic venue that deserves to at least get a try out.

I think that if they continue to have a “European” Grand Prix then it should run at different circuits every year and give those that don’t already host a GP the chance to prove themselves – that way we could see the likes of Motorland, Imola (the new version), Donington et al have a race without having to commit to a long term contract. Though in reality the European GP should be the first to go if we’re letting other countries onto the calendar.

Adrian, that sounds like a really good idea, having a roving Grand Prix as it wee for countries that can’t afford it every year. Question is, how many countries/difefrent ocations would you envisage it going to? Too many and we could go without decent tracks for years at a time, but too few and they amy as well have their own Grand Prix. I was thinking…perhaps…3-5?

Actually having it only once a year would be a real problem for the circuits, because the up-front costs would be too huge for a one-off event. Look at Silverstone, denied long-term security for years, now they have a 17-year contract it’s got a new layout and next year new pits.

Personally, I would scrap Catalunya for Aragon (for the Spanish gp) and replace the Valencia street circuit with Estoril or the Algarve and call it the Portuguese grand prix instead

My personal favourite Spanish track is the Valencia permanent circuit. I saw very exciting races on it though only Moto GP ones. I don’t know if it’s really suited to F1 cars.

But I can’t imagine it included in the calendar either. :(

I was surprised how well the track worked for WTCC, but F1 doesnīt race bumper to bumper and itīs got mainly low speed corners. Therefore F1 should stay away from the permanent circuit apart from testing.

Wasn’t there a GP2 race at the Valencia permanent circuit a few years ago that was criticised for low overtaking? (The only thing I really remember from that race was Adam Carroll rolling his car…) If GP2 can’t overtake there, it’s not going to happen in F1!
(Compare GP2 races, and other feeder series, at Valencia street circuit where it’s usually pretty thrilling stuff!)
