Vettel's racecraft (82 posts)

It was a stunning move, even i’ll admit. But I did feel he was slightly lucky, another day he would have gone slightly wide and look like an idiot. I thought it was bordeline on stupid.

The same could be said of a lot of spectacular moves. What makes them so spectacular is that they’re so on the edge.

Vettel has really earned my respect this year.
I’ve always been a Schumacher fan but seeing as though the Merc isn’t up to scratch yet, I’m enjoying watching the new generation fight it out at the front.

Initially I wondered if Seb was only winning because he had the best car but this year he really has driven impeccably.
I’ve never really understood the argument of him not being able to overtake – it always seemed like a load of rubbish to me.
Yes he messed up a few times and noone seems to be able to forget Turkey last year but there were numerous incidents where he charged through the traffic very impressively after being released from the pits, which was conveniently ignores.
He’s shown such maturity in his driving and he really deserves to be leading the WDC this year.

He’s been blindingly fast in qualifying and has managed to deliver the perfect fast lap when it matters.
The way he does this reminds me of Senna and Schumacher when they would somehow just pull a special lap from out of nowhere right at the last minute.
In the races he’s been fast yet sensible, his strategies have been good and he’s looked after his tires well.
He’s made very few mistakes, the only really notable one I can think of is when Button was chasing him in Canada.
He’s shown incredible consistency and has finished every single race, in no less than fourth place too.

His opponents have stumbled trying to keep up with him.
Lewis in comparison has made so many mistakes in the races.
I don’t want to start a who’s better between Vettel and Hamilton argument – I think that Hamilton is really one of the best there is at the moment but in a slower car he’s obviously had to push much harder and take a more agressive stance and this has sometimes led to mistakes.

Seb on the other hand has remained calm and hasn’t allowed himself to be pressured into making mistakes.
As I said I don’t want to start a Vettel vs Hamilton war, I think together with Alonso they are this generations greats but the way Vettel has driven this year has made me see him as a great driver in a great car instead of a good driver in a great car and I think his driving warrants him leading the championship.

I’ve always loved the way Vettel drives nuts on the last minutes of qualifying. It indeed lets me remind of Senna and Schumacher. Vettel is going onto the edge just like those 2 did in their glory years. You can see that how he drives the car on the kerbs with a banging head from side to side. He uses EVERY single part of the track. If he can shorten a corner without losing speed, he does it. When I saw the polelap of Australia last year, I thought :o WOW that guy can flew at the last chicane. Put it into 5th gear and stepped on the gas so early. Now he just flew their in 6th gear and made another time which blew me away. This is why I have just about EVERY polelap from him. He’s so lightning fast that he impresses me with every polelap. I instantly get the polelap from youtube and put it onto my cellphone. Hah, ironically I don’t even have enough space for much more polelaps. I even needed to delete the polelaps from last year. Would make sense if Schumacher and Senna were as aggressive in qualifying as Vettel.

At that point I knew Adrian Newey made another masterpiece so I automatically knew Vettel would make many poles. I wasn’t convinced about the reliability but the racepace of seb showed me after a few races this year that it has been improved impressivly and that seb could do it all again. And like PinkMaggit already pointed out, no single DNF, a record for himself for the amount of podiums, a record for himself for the amount of wins, a record of poles for him IF he can get another pole, a record for himself for most points in a season and forgive me if I forget a few but only 1 error, and that was in Canada which costs him 1st place and which made him still 2nd. Conclusion: Deffinatly the best season he has EVER had up untill now. And I don’t just love the polelaps only, I now love the overtakingmanouvres too. Allthough, he can’t overtake as good as Button. Give him a few years and he can do it too…

I now have more confidence in him then ever because he showed us all that he can overtake brilliantly. And he doesn’t just overtake someone, he does atleast 1 overtake in style for the media and all the fans out there. However with a move like in Monza, my hart was tikking blooming fast. I hope he knows what he’s doing, cause he was lucky at that time.

Hey Phil; do you have those? I’d love to have them too if you’d send them to me :P Do you have 2008 Monza? Can’t seem to find that one

I don’t see how Button is the best overtaker on the grid. It must be Lewis; he has a decent ability to defend as well.

Where does anyone say Button is the best overtaker?

@raymondu, I have the polelaps of 2010 and 2011. FOM doesn’t always let them review on youtube. I can try to put them back on youtube but I don’t know what’s going to happen.

I would suggest that you search on youtube first and then let me know which ones you miss. Just search for “vettel polelap” and you’ll automatically see lots of them already. The ones from youtube are easy to download. Just search on google “replay media catcher 4″ and download it. It’s for free. You’ll need to hit the green button, when it’s red, it’s recording and if you start watching something from youtube, it automatically downloads the whole clip. You can also convert so that it becomes watchable on your cellphone for instance. I have a samsung star which is why I need to convert to “MPEG 4 samsung”.

I’ll send you the ones that you don’t find on youtube. My email is philippe1203@hotmail.com. I’ll upload those on youtube and send the links to you. Use F1.com to see where he has gotten pole. He has had 10 poles in 2010 and 10 in 2011.

and about button best overtaker, I meant 1 of the best overtakers…

@Ell – to be fair Phil is just saying that Button is a better overtaker than Vettel. For example I’m not the best driver in the world. But my grandmother can’t drive as good as I can.

I don’t know, if you look at jensen’s 2009 season he spent the last half making some excellent overtaking moves after qualifying poorly, and he has excelled at overtaking in 2011. yes canada distorts his figures somewhat, but you only need to look at spa to see that the man can race with the best of them.

I’m not saying Button is a good overtaker; nor am I saying he is a bad one. I’m just saying, that Phil said he is a better overtaker than Button

he has excelled at overtaking in 2011

He has had 52 competitive overtakes this season, more than anyone else. After thirteen races, that means he is averaging four overtakes per race.
