Jeez, wish Letterman would stop interrupting and let him speak. Vettel’s got natural flair in front of a camera, he doesn’t need the host’s interjections, no matter how old or famous he is.

Vettel did well I thought to keep talking over him though, often you hear guests stop and let him speak.

I wasn’t familiar with Letterman’s style, that’s why I interpreted it the way I did and asked whether that was the case.

I think it was an awkward interview for Seb but he handled it quite well. He managed to get across a bit of his jokey side.

I have no doubt that maybe 1% of the audience knew who he was or have heard of F1 in my experience Americans are generally only interested in things taking place in America or where Americans compete. some people ive met have had little understanding of what goes on in other parts of the world. Like I say that has been my experience from meeting people in America and chatting about regular stuff, I met someone who had no idea where Europe was and thought it was a country! not that I want to start an argument about Americans as I have some good friends from there but it was always going to be a tough interview.

I have watched us chat shows before and they never seem to let the guests talk, it makes you wonder why they go on half the time. We wouldn’t have tv like that over here but to americans it’s funny. They also seem to have a lot of running jokes and skits about people you probably haven’t heard of outside the US.

I did learn a few things I hadn’t heard about Seb’s dad being a racer and the home movie was cute! I’d like to see Seb do a chat show in the uk where he would get more of a word in edge ways!

I hope that it sparked some interest for F1 in the US which was obviously the point of the interview, maybe he should have got MSC on instead/ as well as he wanted to talk about him so much!

Watching the video again, I think Letterman slipped up. He really should have focused on the race in New Jersey rather than KERS and DRS. It was a great opportunity to get New York excited for Formula 1, but he only really covered it in the last two minutes.

But I don’t think Letterman was there to promote New Jersey, that was Vettel’s job.

Letterman could have at least given Vettel an opening.

  • Profile picture of ed24f1 ed24f1 said 11 months, 1 week ago:

Well looking at it again, he does give Vettel an opening at about the 8.55 mark – and he did check his card, so obviously he’d been given some information about it. But it’s just like if an actor’s on, Letterman is obliged to maybe ask one question about their film, but he doesn’t have to focus on it.

If anyone I’d say Vettel didn’t really advertise the New Jersey race particularly well, but I guess it’s hard for him to say anything meaningful. I think he was enjoying the moment.

Yeah, of course Letterman interrupted Vettel. But he does that to everyone. He wanted to ask a lot of questions, and the show normally has two or three guests, so it’s pretty obvious he needs to push him along. If you want to listen to Sebastian talking at length about KERS and DRS, I suggest you don’t watch this video!

@ed24f1 why would Vettel even be obliged to advertise it? He was obliged to do a glory run of the circuit, not advertise it on the Letterman show.

@damonsmedley yes but in a way you could get any old f1 pundit to do that. You had a double world champion – a rare breed of the top echelon of F1 drivers – and you ask him about the menial definitions of something that isn’t even “integral” to the cars? Why not at least ask about how quick the cars corner? How the cars drive? etc. Things that are more “fundamental” to the core of F1?

@raymondu999 I very much doubt Letterman would be too desperate to have any old pundit on the show. Of course he could have handled it better, but it wasn’t a terrible interview.

Methinks people’s expectations need to be lowered a touch. :-)

(Not you, but I’ve seen some pretty critical comments about Letterman interrupting and dumbing the interview down)

Wow, Letterman is such an arsehole O.o (And I don’t apologies for the language because I’m quite sure it’s valid)

From about the big balls comment when Vettel started to take the limelight Letterman became obtusely aggressive… .. It seems very clear to me that Letterman does not like F1.

Vettel did a great job considering…
Although, I think someone with more natural flair would have been a better match for that type of show.

I have seen very little of Letterman, but he seemed overly pushy and talkative, like he felt more important than hist guest. That doesn’t make for a good chat show host. Vettel is one of the wittiest F1 drivers on the grid, and to his credit he held his ground, but he should have been given more of a chance to answer the questions and let his personality show.

Yeah, to me (someone that doesn’t watch American chat shows) Letterman came off as a terrible interviewer. Seb obviously had things to say and just got cut off, then Letterman started going on about KERS (sounded like a hybrid plug) and slating DRS without bothering to let Vettel explain it. Not to mention the whole Indy vendetta, Vettel obviously agreed with him in the end just to get him to shut up about it. Why would you go on about a race that ended years ago when you have two new circuits being built specifically for F1 in the next few years?

    Just terrible.

I’m finding the range of comments about this interview to be pretty interesting! Personally, I enjoyed it a lot and thought Seb did great, as I knew he would from seeing him in other such situations (most notably Top Gear). I also didn’t think David Letterman was so bad, but maybe I’ve just become used to him over the course of my life. I don’t even watch his show regularly anymore, but I used to, and I often enjoy his deadpan sense of humor. Anyway, I don’t really mean this comment as an argument against what any of you are saying; I’ve just been surprised by the very different reactions I’ve been seeing here and elsewhere!
