I am beginning to calm down from the whole Sky thing. There are more important things going on in the world (London) than making Bernie feel even more powerful.

As long as there is a FREE full replay show I would be happy. Even though I set my alarm for the early morning F1 events I must admit that I never wake up and end up playing back at my own leisure on Sky+

The annoying thing would be if the replay was delayed for a day. I couldn’t imagine apending a whole day avoiding hearing the results.

Superted666, the BBC is £145 per year (assuming you don’t fall under a free category such as the over-75s), but Sky requires that too – and then charges the £47.70/£60 per race that’s been quoted frequently.

f1paddocks, the BBC have already said there’d be 75-minute extended highlights, not the full show.

Where did you hear 75-minutes confirmed? The last I heard it was just ‘extended highlights’ with Whitmarsh under the impression it was a full re-run.

Bernie thinks highlights of “about an hour” would be good enough for us.

That’s the problem, highlights would only be worth watching if you already know the result. Every boring lap where nothing happens is still part of the race, still part of the unfolding picture you get of the race. Every lap is important to how the race develops. Cutting those laps in a highlights show means you miss things, even minor things, which contribute heavily towards the final outcome. If a set of 4 or 5 laps are missed and a gap between drivers has closed in that time, or if somebodies pitted so appears randomly in a different position, you don’t want to have missed that, it screws up the linearity of the narrative and makes watching it difficult, unless you already know the result being built to, then it doesn’t matter so much.

matt90, the timing news has been confirmed by James Allen, who cites sources from the BBC.

Thanks for the link. So it’s true that we will be shown an incomplete, deferred race. Either Whitmarsh was lying to falsely appease fans or he was misinformed when he said that a whole delayed race would be shown.

Given Martin said it before the confirmation came through, I think it is most likely that he was misinformed by Bernie.

If as part of the contract the BBC have the right to show the whole race then they’d be mad not to – they’ve paid for it.

I reckon it will be ‘extended’ highlights (whatever that means, highlights are highlights as soon as you edit anything, to describe them as extended is a nonsense) during prime time, and the whole race tucked away late at night where people who care enough can watch it but it won’t be interrupting Casualty or whatever it is that is so important during prime time.

The more I think about and find out about this the more of a mess it seems to me. It is just bizarre. If the BBC were not able to continue covering F1 properly they should have walked away, it is them being selfish and precious over the rights which has led to this.

For the record, I wouldn’t pay Sky £1 a race let alone £61. They can do one. I hope the many thousands who have said they will will have the courage of their convictions and make this a spectacular flop for Sky and all involved.
