Who is Currenlty the Quickest driver in F1? (57 posts)

Vettel is clearly the fastest.. so many factors speak for him. The fact that he’s got the quickest car is just a bonus but by no means the REASON why this is. Lets not forget that Webber is fighting both Ham and Alonso in the championship currently in the SAME car. It’s a testament as to how much he has grown since last season, it’s almost scary!

    Alonso second, Ham third.

Can I just point out that nobody knows who actually is the fastest driver? People say that the RBR is the fastest car. How in h*ll do we know that? You could say, “Because the McLarens are x kph slower on the apex of Turn Y in Circuit Z.” So how do we know that that wasn’t the driver?

My point being, take for example the last race, where Vettel was .4 ahead of Button or some such gap. Nobody knows how much of that is driver, and how much is car. It could be that the Red Bull is actually 1 second faster, and Vettel is .6 slower, or it could actually be the McLaren is .5 second faster, as opposed to what people think; and that Button is .9 slower. No one REALLY knows how fast a car could truly go. If Liuzzi and Karthikeyan were driving the Red Bull, I’d bet that the McLaren would have more poles than the Red Bull. Would we be saying then that the RBR is fastest? I think not.

To be honest, there are plenty of “expert” in F1 saying Alonso and Hamilton are the best around there. Consider the bad reputation Hamilton seems to have right now, and how each and everyone are attacking him for nothing.. if someone still admits his skills and talent, maybe they are pretty evident. Vettel is a great driver, but seriously, he still has to prove to be a true champion with a middle-field car. As someone said, STR in some races was very quick and big names are out of contention. General impression in F1 is if Hamilton and Alonso had RBR, they would lap everyone else. With all respect for Vettel, Button, Webber.

General IMPRESSION being the key word. Nobody really knows. And to be honest the general word in the paddock is that Vettel Hamilton Alonso are the best, rather than just Hamilton Alonso. And most people admit that 2007 Hamilton is much better than 2011 Hamilton.

Sam Michael also said in Nurburgring FP2 (or was it FP3?), “I subscribe…” *Crofty interrupts him *I subscribe to the general belief of the paddock, which is that Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel are the best 3 drivers in Formula One. Those three are the drivers… they can get a good result out of nothing.” – He states explicitly that this is the general paddock belief.

And do tell me the last time a car was not quick but achieved a good result. Also, you point to some big names being out of contention. Who’s fault was that, exactly?

Roberto, no.. RBR is clearly the faster and better car.

Webber is not a great driver..

Yes, but let’s not forget Webber has always been massively fast. Remember him out qualifying Ferraris in a Jaguar?

Hamilton is the fastest in terms of pure pace in my opinion. However that does not necessarily make him the best e.g when Kimi was in F1 he was arguably the ‘fastest’, but other things make you the best. This year Hamilton has been inconsistent and overdriving the car.

Alonso is the most consistent (able to be at his maximum level of performance for prolonged periods of time.)

However on this season’s form (not ’07 or ’08 Hamilton fans) Vettel is currently the best driver in Formula One, as he is very quick and very consistent merging the best attributes of Lewis and Fernando.

I just wish Mclaren and Ferrai can increase their competitiveness next year so we have a proper title fight.

Oh and Di Resta is the quickest rookie, Perez has potential but I can definitely see Paul winning races in the future if he has a good car.

    2) Hamilton and Alonso are more exciting and have better drives than Vettel.

Well you’re ignoring the question again. Exciting doesn’t mean they are the best, they just make more of a meal out of getting the victory, even when they have the fastest car.

The question is who is the quickest driver not the most entertaining.

Not one driver has ever won the championship with a midfield car. Certainly not Alonso and Hamilton. In fact, Hamilton has proven himself less than Vettel in midfield machinery.

    Spot on David.

And dam00r, I never said RBR wasn’t the fastest car (quite the opposite actually), but it’s mostly Vettels talent and speed as to why he’s so far ahead in points this season. And Webbers Championship standing is proof of that.

  • Profile picture of raymondu999 raymondu999 said 1 year, 7 months ago:

And as someone else here mentioned, Webber is not a shabby driver either. He has beat Alonso in the same machinery before over a season

Point 1. Hamilton won a championship in 2008 in what was NOT the best F1 car. And he would have won more races than Massa if FIA left him the Spa victory. Has Vettel ever won a race with a non-best car?! ..don’t remember.. (STR at Monza 2008 was one of the bests.. and Ferraris-Mclarens were pretty out of contention..)
Despite I don’t like Alonso, he proved to drive very well in the past, with Minardi and Renault.
Point 2. Definitely, Webber’s 2011 car was not exactly the same of Vettel’s..

STR at Monza was not one of THE BESTS. And whose fault was it that the Ferraris/McLarens were out of contention?

Also, there is no proof that Webber doesn’t have the same spec of car.

People always praise raining races, because they level the field and the good drivers get a chance to show their worth, but for some reason, that doesn’t apply to Monza 2008 because Vettel won. Am I crazy, or is there something wrong with that?

  • Profile picture of raymondu999 raymondu999 said 1 year, 7 months ago:

People say that the rain lets a driver show more skill; and that the rain can show which drivers really can cut it. Hamilton 07 Fuji, 08 Silverstone; he had a great rain car too. But people were praising his wet weather skills instead. Why is it different for Monza 2008? Or did Senna’s 1984 Toleman just the best car in the wet? He did after all chew up the McLarens and Ferraris (driven by the Mansells/Prosts/Laudas) at something like 3s per lap
