I remember when he was coming up through F3000 as it was then (I think), West (the McLaren sponsors of the time) funded an F3000 team which Nick was in and he did pretty well. Factor in that he was a McLaren tester for a few years too, he looked pretty set to be a McLaren driver in the future, not unlike Hamilton. However when his chance came when Hakkinen went on a “sabbatical”, it was his younger team-mate who only just got a super-licence in the first place who landed the plum seat!

N.B. A lot of this is partially my opinion of events which did happen.

Perhaps what BasCB saw in him is similar to what the teams thought – hence Raikkonen was taken instead of him. Either way, I don’t think Heidfeld has ever really been treated fairly in F1. Similar situation to Liuzzi really – no one appears to want him and when he’s finally in a team he provides decent results which are then overlooked.

I never understood why Raikkonen was picked over Heidfeld. Not even after Raikkonen’s title – Heidfeld beat him in equal equipment at Sauber!

To be fair Kimi was straight out of Formula Renault into F1. McLaren got carried away by the hype and it eventually cost them if you think about it!

Even Nick himself once admitted he was the slowest driver…
