Will there ever be an F1 oval race? (25 posts)

I know it will most probably never happen, but I think having one or two ovals on the calendar would be great. Something completely different and a welcome addition to the season.

I’d love to see an F1 oval race too, personally I’d quite like to see F1 cars entering the Indy 500 – although they’d obviously need a bit of modification first.

But aren’t Indy Cars specially designed, with all the important stuff on one side of the car because they only have to turn one direction? In this era of cost cutting, F1 teams aren’t going to be designing new cars for a single oval race per season.

But, what I’ve always thought would be a great idea is a Figure of 8 ‘oval’, like that one off Mario Kart. That’d mean the cars would have to turn both left and right, there could still be high speed laps and banked corners, and of course there’d be a crossover section and thus some elevation changes. But, as far as I’m aware no such circuit exists, so it shall forever remain a pipe dream of mine

I don’t see why they’d need to be specially re-designed. In their current spec the F1 cars would simply be slower than the IndyCars, something which the FIA would be very happy about considering how horrified they are of cornering speeds.

Of course what we really need is more straight-line speed-dependant circuits anyway. An oval would be a great start.

Aren’t IndyCars a lot more standardised than F1 cars? I mean, the performance difference between the Red Bull and the HRT is bad enough on road circuits, it would surely become downright dangerous on an oval?

I don’t think F1 needs ovals, to be completely honest. The IndyCar series already has single-seater oval racing down to a fine art already. I think that if F1 tried it, the results wouldn’t be anywhere near as exciting as we would hope they would be. Also I like how ovals help to give IndyCars an identity. That’s their thing. F1 does international road circuits, IndyCars do a mixture of road circuits and ovals. If F1 started doing ovals, it’d get harder to differentiate between what F1 racing is and what IndyCar racing is. That’s just how I see it.

Funnily enough Geoff, the difference would be less on on oval, because Red Bulls are draggy as hell whereas HRTs have no downforce anyway!

I don’t think it would matter if it wasn’t as good, nor would it really blur the lines. IndyCar hasn’t lost its identity because of having more road courses. I understand your opinion though.

    I like Dan Thorn’s idea of a “paper-clip” style circuit….would be interesting…
