Any news on wether Williams will have to change their livery in Bahrain this weekend? We’ve seen Force India have to remove a lot of their sponsors due to the laws against alcohol advertisement in previous years.

Red Bull also had their Singha logo on the car at Abu Dhabi last year:
Force India ran with their alcohol sponsors at Bahrain last year and, guess what, the Singha logo was on the Red Bull too. McLaren removed the Johnnie Walker logos from their visors:

Now I have no issue with the removal of alcohol sponsors in Islamic countries, but it has to be consistent in the way it was in the tobacco advertising days. As a resident of the Gulf I know for a fact that you can drink legally (albeit only in certain places) in both Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. I also know that in “dry” states like Saudi and Kuwait it is incredibly easy to get hold of alcohol. I make weekly trips to Kuwait from the UAE and it always amuses me that people in full national dress order alcohol every time I’m on that flight. Each to their own I guess.
Given the recent spate of deaths in the Gulf caused by energy drinks it should be Red Bull revising their livery.

1st April 2014, 13:41 at 1:41 pm #254978andae23ParticipantYeah, last year Force India removed ‘Whyte and Mackay’ and replaced it with the names of two people who had won a competition. But it does seem rather inconsistent.
I believe I read somewhere yesterday that the word ‘Martini’ will be replaced by ‘Williams Martini’, but no official news yet.
EDIT: this is what Adam Cooper wrote about it yesterday:
Further to the Martini tweet Williams will run with 'Williams Martini' logos rather than usual 'Martini' version. Complicated!

1st April 2014, 13:48 at 1:48 pm #254979GeeMacParticipantThat reminds me of the old Williams “Rothmans Ltd.” they would run in Canada.
1st April 2014, 15:07 at 3:07 pm #254982BullfrogParticipantI thought they were sponsored by Martini clothing on these occasions. That’s how Vijay Mallya’s brands get around it. Don’t remember ever seeing the sportscars, Porsches or rally Lancias without Martini on them.
I still think they should do a deal with London Transport – or ‘Valtteri’ would look quite good on the logo.
2nd April 2014, 0:30 at 12:30 am #255053CalumParticipantObviously the Martini logo is the roughly the same shape as the London transport roundel but interestingly enough Williams Hybrid Engineering (F1 team subsidiary) did a deal with Transport for London in 2012 to stick flywheel energy recovery systems in some buses, utilising technology directly derived from the unraced 2009 Williams KERS system so there is history between the two!
2nd April 2014, 4:10 at 4:10 am #255054Mr. TParticipantFunny coincidence but they just announced the sale of Williams Hybrid Power yesterday
2nd April 2014, 8:37 at 8:37 am #255070BullfrogParticipantJust ‘Williams Martini’, and not ‘Racing’? That’s fitting for a team that doesn’t want its drivers to race.
3rd April 2014, 11:24 at 11:24 am #255140andae23Participant‘Racing’ it is:
Williams had to modifiy the @Martini_drinks logo on the FW36 because alcohohl advertising is banned in #Bahrain. pic.twitter.com/KIZxrS7z8Y

3rd April 2014, 12:23 at 12:23 pm #255143GeeMacParticipantThis will have been incredibly worthless if the Singha and Johnnie Walker logos remain on the Red Bull and McLaren, the tequila logos remain on the Sauber and all of Kingfisher and Royal Challenge logos aren’t removed from the Force India.
3rd April 2014, 13:00 at 1:00 pm #255146BullfrogParticipantWhen the DRS flap is open, it’s not Racing any more…
