I was having a chat with @fastiesty and he made me wonder which drivers F1Fanatic readers hold high. What is your ultimate top 5/10 of drivers across all times for whatever reason.
This is mine
1) Clark
2) Prost
3) Moss
4) Senna
5) SchumacherMy top 10 would include; Fangio, Ascari, Alonso, Gilles Villeneuve and Graham Hill.
My top 15 would include; Ickx, Montoya, Lauda, Stewart and Hamilton or Vettel (to soon to call)Groundrules
1) Post as follows;
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)2) Not allowed to attack someone for putting someone at a certain place, if you want Maldonado there you can!
3) If you post someone not so familiar perhaps provide some information. (e.g. Depaillier, Modena, …)20th April 2015, 20:39 at 8:39 pm #297259safeeuropeanhomeParticipantOk I’ll play.
Moss ahead of Fangio? I would be interested to hear the reasoning behind that. Just based on their F1 accomplishments or what they did outside F1 too? I could understand Moss being so high if you take into account stuff outside F1. But then where is Mario Andretti if that is the case. Anyway based solely on what they have accomplished in F1, my top 10 would look something like:
1. Clark
2. Senna
3. Prost
4. Schumacher
5. Fangio6. Stewart
7. Alonso
8. Lauda
9. Moss
10. HamiltonThe top 5 is a lot easier to pick for me than those outside it. I’ve thought about this before and that top 5 hasn’t changed for a long time.
I find it hard to rank Vettel at the moment, I’m not sure where exactly where to put him.

After that: Ascari, Moss, Stewart, Lauda, Alonso;
Surtees, G.Villeneuve, Piquet, Hamilton, Vettel;
Rindt, Andretti, Peterson, Hakkinen, Raikkonen;
Brabham, Reutemann, Mansell, Berger, Montoya.A lot of people would probably swap Surtees and Brabham, who I would also be tempted to replace with Ickx, Cevert or Button. Others would also probably recommend G.Hill and Fittipaldi instead.

Caracciola – 23
Nuvolari – 22
Varzi – 21
Chiron – 19
Fagioli – 11
Rosemeyer – 10
Lang – 8
Nazzaro – 5
Benoist – 5
Divo – 5There’s some win inflation in that list as obviously there were not many GPs in the early days.. Benoist was the first ‘superstar’ driver of the mid-20s, followed by Varzi vs Chiron, and Nuvolari vs Caracciola in the 30s.
Post-war but pre/NC-F1 there is also:
Fangio 24
Villoresi 23
Moss 21
Clark 19
Ascari 17
Farina 17
Brabham 16
Behra 12
Rosier 11Wimille was the top driver of the 1940s but ‘only’ has 9 wins.. Villoresi was similarly hit by the war also occurring during their respective ‘peak periods’.
So, a respective ‘top ten all-time GP win list’ looks like:
Schumacher – 91
Prost – 51
Fangio – 48
Clark – 44
Senna – 41
Vettel – 40
Moss – 37
Hamilton – 36
Stewart – 32
Alonso – 32If we ‘transfer’ 20 of Schumi’s wins to Senna (or get them off D.Hill instead), you can see why Schumacher, Senna, Prost are constantly in the top 5, while those who know the pre-Bernie era will also include Fangio, Clark, Moss and Stewart. Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso are now making waves to be included on all-time top driver lists once they retire.
