A thread about the organisers of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix altering the circuits layout (and the topics subsequent discussion :D) got me wondering:
What alterations would the F1 Fanatics make to the world’s circuits given free reign?

Hmm, so my previous post wasn’t a double post after all? How confusing! All I had said in the original phantom comment was that I was thinking of starting a thyread like this myself.
Obviously Alex the Monaco one is completely implausible, but I’ve often wondered what the circuit would be like if the chicane wasn’t there and the cars approached Tabac at 200mph? It would be some corner, that’s “for sure”!
You know we are F1 Fanatics ‘for sure’ when we put that term in parenthasis!

Love it moot :) – I’ve always thought that the Clark Chicane should be turned into two sweepers. Mind you down at the sports centre I believe your latout would require the demolition of a football ground XD
You could Take out the awful chicane at the penultimate corner in Catalunya for a start! The track is still there and the MotoGP boys don’t use the Chicane.
I do this every year and I never save the links, having to start all over again!
I made the corners sharper to make it less about aero and to get rid of the final chicane, also a new bit to improve what’s a pretty boring sequence of 180s. Turn 1 switches back a little for better overtaking, especially at the start.
This Gmaps business is a bit complicated. Do you have to draw curves through tiny little straight lines joined together, or is there an easier way?
Sometimes the “automatic” option actually follows the track, like with Albert Park for instance. Most others need the straight lines though. What I do is zoom in to the greatest magnification and keep clicking to the centre of the track (when I’m following the original race course) and for the long straights just zoom out and all the way back in at the other end. It usually takes me less than 2 minutes to do one.
Nice to see the effort going into this. I like the idea of spicing up these tracks a bit as well.

Only if you’re using the manual line tool. if you use the automatic one, it will automatically plot out the shortest distance between two points by following the roads. If you go outside the roads, then you must use automatic; likewise if the circuit is not covered by the pedometer.
However, in some places – most notably the Middle East and some remote areas like Mongolia and eastern Russia – there is no data for distances, so you must always use the manual tool, even if the roads are marked. And there are no roads marked at all in Israel, even when there are satellite photos of their cities. I suppose the Israeli government didn’t want street maps uploaded with a tool that marks distances lest terrorists use it to plot attacks into Israel.
@F1Alex – I haven’t seen the Indy GP track since they made those alterations. They finally got rid of that horrible double switchback, I see.
