Ed, a forum newbie here. I am taking “the other half” to the Monaco Grand Prix this year. I quite like the idea of a balcony view. My budget is around 1200 euros pp. I suspect my options might be quite limited at this price but shall be grateful for any advice re this. Thanks.

What to do???

I’m visiting this part of the world for the first time and want to make as much of the very brief time I have there as I can. I’m arriving in the early afternoon of the Friday of the GP weekend and I’m heading out first thing on the Monday morning after the race. I have my tickets for Quali and the Race but would like to take in as much of Nice and Monaco as I can when there is no action on track. I don’t drink (was dropped on my head as a child I think) so I’m not keen to just hang out in a bar. Are there any things that are must see attractions that I can fit into the few hours I have free in the mornings? I was going to spend Friday afternoon looking around Nice (that’s where I’m staying) but I have no plans other than that? Restaurant advice would be good too.

I know the above may be more of a question for Tripadvisor but I thought I’d ask people who here experience with the area at GP time.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Nice is a great place to spend some time – we always stay in Nice and travel in to Monaco. The old town in Nice is lovely, shame you are not there in the morning as the flower market and the fruit/veg is set up in the mornings with most of the stalls starting to clear away early afternoon. I would suggest the bus tour is probably the best way of seeing Nice and you can get on and off at the various stops and pick up the next bus which comes past. This goes from the Promenade Des Anglais by the Albert 1 Gardens – depending where you are staying there may be another stop more convenient. You get a headset which tells you the history of the area, and takes you to all the places which may be of interest including the harbour, the Russian quarter, Roman ruins, various other places of interest. The bus just loops. The other suggestion is to take the lift up to the tower which overlooks Nice – the views are amazing. This can be accessed through a tunnel to get the lift or if you are feeling energetic you can walk up!

Re Monaco, the problem you will find is that due to the action on Saturday/Sunday you are limited as to what you can see/do in Monaco. You can go round the zoo and the car collection of Prince Rainier, and you should I think be able to walk up to the Palace, but how easy it will be to get round at this time, I am not sure. It is worth making the effort however, as you can go to the Cathedral and there are tours around the palace. The problem is on these 2 days, a lot of the F1 fans go up there to try and get views of the circuit.

Re restaurants in Nice, you are spoilt for choice. The market in the old town is full of restaurants, most of them are very good but get very busy. It really depends what you want to eat – there is an Italian influence in the area. Every year we have been there seem to be new restaurants appearing although we have a couple of favourites which we tend to go to more than others. It really is a case of what your preference is food wise and also your budget. There is something to suit everyone.

Hi I am hoping you can help me with prep for attending 2013 Monaco GP. It is a once in a lifetime trip from New Zealand and taking in the Monaco GP is a surprise for my Dad who is a GP/all motorsport worshipper from way back (will tell him when he is watching the 2012 Monaco GP on TV). Am thinking Grandstand T high on Sat & K 1 high for Sun from what I have read so many thanks for that. Is it worth going Thurs/Fri also or Sat/Sun enough? Would like to extend the experience as long as possible but we do have other things we want to do while in Europe so time is precious… but if I thought he could get on the track, near pits or close to a driver that would be AMAZING!! When will next years tickets go on sale (aim to purchase through Monte Carlo automobile) and is Nice the best place to stay for convenience and atmosphere? Definitely want to start getting this all sorted as soon as able/practical. Thanks so much!

i am planning the rest of my week in the south of France and ask you this: on Friday, does the city works normally, since there in no F1 activity? Is the Grand Casino open? Are the restaurants and clubs open? Is there any restrict access?

Hi, I am looking to book tickets for the monaco grand prix this year. Ive been reading around the forum and people seem to have differing opinions over whether the pits can be seen for T grandstand ( lower). May i know if i book seats from the top row of T (lower), will I be able to see the pits? And also, which section should i sit in (T1, T2 or T3 and which column) if i want to best see the red bull and ferrari pits? Thank you!

Hi, I’m looking to go this year and I’ve read that grandstand k is the place to be.. There r still seats available, but where do u think is the best place to sit in k section? Went to the ACM site and there appears to be good selection left? I’m mainly interested to go and take pics so can anyone recommend a good vantage location? Also.. If u book via the ACM site, do try send tic to ur home? Or do u need to collect in Monaco?? Thanks!!

Hi Nicky, that’s a great gift for your dad and what a time to surprise him with it – excellent!

Staying in Nice keeps your costs down and there are some lovely hotels, great restaurants, lots to do, etc.

Good choices for the grandstands.

There is no F1 action on Friday so you may want to skip going to the grandstands that day but if you have Saturday/Sunday tickets you could do a pit walk on the Friday afternoon which your dad might like. Thursday is obviously practise but only you guys can decide if it’s too much. You could do something like Caroline and watch from a yacht on the Thursday for a different experience with hospitality etc.

There are support races on the Friday morning so the track is closed for that. But everything outside the track is open as usual and the track opens on Friday afternoon again. Restaurants, clubs, bars, casino all open.

Typically K1 high is most popular but it sells out quickly – if you go to the offical ACM (Automobile Club de Monaco) website http://www.formula1monaco.com you can select each of the K grandstands and see photographs taken from each one, that should help you make your decision. Although if you are going for photography then you will simply have different versions of the same shot if you stick with one grandstand and all from the same height/perspective/etc.

You could go to a different grandstand each day for shots from a different location each day or you could do what a lot of people I help who are going for photography do and mix it up with, for example, a yacht on Thursday, a balcony on Saturday and grandstand K on Sunday.

If Shivy is still registered on the forum he is going for photography and is doing something along those lines so he might help also…Shivy are you there? If he’s not Benedict then email me directly and I’ll email introduce you both so you can chat further about what he decided on and why.
