T4 is a pretty good spot. In the link I posted earlier for my pics, many of the shots from V8 Supercar Austin 400 were taken from that area. It also makes it easier to get to the GA area between 6 & 9. The bridge to the Grand Plaza is right there also. I’ll be over in the T15 Corner GS, but will be heading over to your side for pics throughout the weekend. The GA section on the hill at 6 is good spot for that.24th July 2013, 16:01 at 4:01 pm #216605
I thought I’d throw this out there also in case there is anyone planning on coming to the USGP & hasn’t bought tickets yet. Since I rented the RV space & I have my own season tickets, I will have 4 GA tickets that came with the space available. Would like to get in the area of $150 ea for them & if anyone takes all 4, I have a parking pass in Lot J(paved & right by the T11 entrance) that I will sell for $100. If you were to buy these from the circuit, it would come to $955.86. I’m at $700 delivered by courier.29th July 2013, 2:31 at 2:31 am #216606
Hello all, I’m finalizing my plans to go to the US GP this year. Probably going to buy tickets for turn 12, which seems to be a good section to see the cars in several turns. For those who have attended last year’s GP, I was wondering if tickets for the grandstands allow access to the other areas of the general admission tickets (I though it would be nice to spend Friday watching the practice sessions from other places to take some pictures). Also, what is the best option to get to the circuit from downtown Austin? I was planning to rent a car, but the parking tickets are quite expensive… is there a shuttle that takes people to the track from anywhere in the city (like the airport)? Thanks for any tips, this will be my second GP venue visit (I’m from Brazil and have been to the Brazilian GP several times, including last year!) Best29th July 2013, 4:30 at 4:30 am #216607
In all likelihood, there will be a downtown shuttle location as last year that will take you right to the track & return. So, if you are staying downtown, it will provide easy transportation without the need for a car. The FanFest activities will be downtown or at Auditorium Shores which is just across the river. Lots of pedicabs & they also had a free bus service that looped around the downtown activities. However, if you haven’t booked your hotel, prepare for sticker shock & limited availability. If you stay outside of town &’rent a car, Lot Q parking is only $60 for the weekend. Fairly close to track & they shuttle by bus from there. Last year they had parking & shuttle from the airport also for same amount, but haven’t heard confirmation yet on that.
Grandstand tickets give you access to that specific GS & all GA areas. The GA area between 6 & 9 should be good spot for pics.29th July 2013, 14:48 at 2:48 pm #216608
@budaman thanks for the tips Michael! I couldn’t find accommodation in downtown Austin for reasonable prices, so I will stay at Motel6 in North Austin, around 30 minutes from the track. But I managed to get a very good deal for a rental car. Since I can cancel the reservation until very close to the race weekend, I’ll keep looking for something a bit nearer to the track or downtown Austin.
You mentioned Lot Q parking is $60 for the weekend, but is it necessary to buy in advance, or do the parking lots work on a first come first serve basis? Ticketmaster is charging $200 for any parking lot on their website along with the tickets…
One final question, which seat do you think is better, turn 12 or turn 5? I was initially going for turn 12 due to the overtaking spot, but then I saw some videos of the cars on the fast bends of turn 3-4-5 from turn 5 seats, and it looked amazing. Since I can basically walk around all the GA areas to take pictures on Friday and Saturday, I don’t know which place is best to actually watch the race on Sunday. Any recommendations?29th July 2013, 15:27 at 3:27 pm #216609
If you go to the F1 listing on the CoTA site & click on Parking, Lot Q will show up in the TicketMaster List @ $60. I doubt if you wait, there will be any left in that lot & it will be more expensive if they make it one of the cash lots the day of the race.
I would go with T12, as there are no GA spots in that area. There are GA areas over by the bends. There is a good hill around 6 that puts you above the fenceline there. I have a post earlier in this thread with a link to my pics from the V8 Austin 400 race that a lot of the pics are taken from that vantage point. T12 will get you good views of the straight, T12 & the T13-15 complex. I’ll be in the T15 GS’s.
Last year, prices of the closer in hotels started coming down as the race got closer, but I don’t know if that will happen this year as there is a home UT football game that Saturday. You might look at hotels in Buda for availablility. Would be much more convenient as you can get there by using the 45 & 130 tollways. Without traffic, it’s a 12 minute drive. If you got parking in ‘Q’ you could even use SH 21 to get there & miss most of the raceday traffic. Lot ‘Q’ is basically at the SH21 & FM812 intersection. The city of Buda actually had a shuttle for hotel guests last year that picked up & dropped off at the hotels, but not sure if they plan on it this year. It was pretty popular last year though. I say city loosely though….we only have about 2000 residents.29th July 2013, 16:50 at 4:50 pm #216610
Marcky…..just a followup. If you booked the Motel 6 at Rundberg & IH35, there is a reason the rate is as low as it is. Not a good place to be! Lots of problems in that area of town. It’s a shame because it used to be a nice area. Owned a home about a mile from that hotel back in the 70’s, but sure wouldn’t want to be hanging out in that area after dark anymore. Wife got mugged a block away a couple of years ago in broad daylight by a gang of teens after visiting the IRS office close by.29th July 2013, 18:09 at 6:09 pm #216611
@budaman thanks mate! Just purchased my tickets for T12 GS. In the end, I preferred to purchase the $200 parking, because I read in a few places that the lines to take the shuttle buses back after the race were quite long, and my flight back to Chicago leaves a few hours after the race, so I couldn’t afford to run the risk of losing too much time waiting for the shuttles.
So, since I am going alone to the track in a rental car, if there is anyone going to the race who hasn’t figured out plans to get to the track and would like to split the costs of the parking, I’d be more than happy to carpool during the 3 days! Let me know if anyone is interested!29th July 2013, 18:12 at 6:12 pm #216612
@budaman wow, just saw your followup… yes, that is exactly the Motel 6 i booked… will change my reservations than and look for some other place. thanks again!29th July 2013, 18:22 at 6:22 pm #216613
Which lot did you get parking in… F, L or P?
Checked a few hotels & there aren’t many that don’t have a 4 night minimum, but the least expensive I found in a decent area without a minimum night reservation was the Motel 6 in San Marcos @ $105/nt. San marcos is a pretty cool place….lots of good restaurants & bars. Home of Texas State University which for a long time was rated one of the partiest schools in the country. San Marcos is about 30 miles south of downtown Austin. Pretty easy to get to the track from there also.29th July 2013, 18:47 at 6:47 pm #216614
I got parking lot F, which seemed to be the closest to the T12 entrance.
I saw the option of Motel6 in San Marcos, but it seemed to be a bit farther from the track, but since you say it is a good area, I’ll probably go for it now. I wanted some place closer to downtown Austin to be able to go to the FanFest, but it’s been difficult to find something for a reasonable price. I’ll book Motel6 in San Marcos to be safe and keep looking for something closer to Austin as the race approaches.29th July 2013, 20:37 at 8:37 pm #216615
In all actuality, the way the traffic pattern is to the track from Austin, it will probably take less time to get to the track from San Marcos than anyplace north of the river in Austin.
I’ve got to get my brother & my son to the airport after the race also.
We need to keep in touch so I can buy you an adult beverage at some point!29th July 2013, 23:53 at 11:53 pm #216616
Sure thing! Let’s keep in touch, it will be nice to get together with other fellow F1 fanatics for a drink during the race weekend.6th August 2013, 17:08 at 5:08 pm #216617
I have Bought my ticket and parking pass a while back. I reserved a room at Motel 6 close to Austin Airport.
Now i might have miscalculated my budget a bit which leaves me possibly without a car. If anyone wants to park right next to the Track at Turn 1 (Parking Lot P) and is willing to pick me up…. That would be free Parking for the weekend. Just let me know12th August 2013, 20:16 at 8:16 pm #216618
