@marcky Yes that would have been a good thing.l I always have the chance of selling my pass on Stubhub or so. I might get back with you on this when we get closer. Should know for sure next month.

HAving done Silverstone this year I have been bitten by the race bug so after a quick shuffle of travel plans I am now going to the Texas race.
Got seats at Turn 5, which should be a good spot.
But better still was the accommodation we got.
I took a tip from here about airbnb.co.uk – on there I found a 2012 airstream in someones back yard about 10mins from the track, got it for 2 nights at £65 per night. for two of us.. Considering what the motels are charging, I am pretty stoked with that.
As Texas is the end of our road trip (LA>Vegas>Austin) we shall have a car but not booked parking yet, good or bad idea????
Also those flying home are you multi stopping or have you got direct flights?

I would hold off on parking until they announce where the shuttle sites are going to be this year. I went to a function a couple of weeks ago & it appears the locations will be much closer to the track than last year. You don’t mention where your lodging is….that will also determine your best option, depending on which direction it is 10 minutes away.

The stuff I saw indicated one of the shuttle lots would be very convenient to that location. No official announcement yet on shuttle locations though. For CoTA parking, lot N if they offer parking, would be the closest to your seats….there has been talk of that. If not, it would be a toss up between Lot L by T11 & what used to be P, but is now maybe T…close to T1. Those are both $200 lots. Lot Q is the least @ $60, but is even further east at the intersection of 812 & 21. They shuttle you from there to the Grand Plaza area.

Hi all, having lost my bonoculars at a GT meeting at Silverstone last year I need to replace them as I am headed to Austin in a little over three weeks time. (not long now!) In the UK a reasonable pair are expensive and I assume that like events in the UK, they will be selling binoculars at the circuit? If so should I buy there instead, everything is so much cheaper in the US compared to the UK but at the circuit the prices are likely to be inflated. Also, at UK events the organisers supply inexpensive ear piece radios that allow you to hear the trackside commentary, did they have something similar at Austin last year? I will have an iPad with me and if there is access to wi-fi at the circuit I could probably hook up to some form of race coverage with commentary. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Good morning Colin….or I guess afternoon in the UK.

Least expensive pair at the track will be in the $40 range & then jumps to about $160. The $40 ones are 8X21. Probably find something comparable for $20 or so at any sporting goods store in the area. If you are coming in early enough, I’d go to one of these two places.

    http://www.academy.com/shop/browse/_/N-0?Ns=NowPrice%7C0&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=All&Ntt=binoculars

    http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/search/?N=&Ns=MIN_SALE_PRICE&Ntk=AllProducts&Ntt=binoculars&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products&WTz_stype=SN&form_state=searchForm&search=binoculars&searchTypeByFilter=AllProducts&x=0&y=0

There has been no radio broadcast at any of the events. I don’t believe they have wifi either. They apparently have upgraded their cellular coverage at the track, but the roaming charges for data would probably be cost prohibitive. There has been no replacement for FanVision as far as I know.

Shuttles aren’t free this year, but really not expensive either.

So, tickets arrived in the mail today, excited that the GP is only 2 weeks from now. I’ve mentioned this before, but now it seems that there’s more people checking in this forum. I purchased parking on Lot F, which is close to grandstands around the T12-T15 complex. I’ll be staying in downtown Austin, so if anyone wants to carpool and share parking costs, let me know. I can drive you back and forth the track to somewhere in downtown Austin (i’m staying near to where the FanFest is) during the weekend. Cheers!

Any word on whether there’s going to be a pit walk on Thursday?

I’ll have VIP access this year, follow me on twitter @f1photog.

There is a VIP Pit Walk Thursday afternoon between 3 & 5 PM. I know it is for PSL & Suite holders, but not sure about ticket holders that bought event packages. I had to print a pass through TicketMasters using a code I was sent from CoTA. I would check with whomever you bought your pkg with, if your tickets don’t say PSL or Suite on them. Paddock Club has several Pit Walks scheduled throughout the weekend.

Arrive into austin weds night,im getting excited
On the monday post race im heading down to San Antonio and ive booked the greyhound,it was only $15 return, however im thinking of hiring a car for a couple of days instead but is it worth it just to basically transport myself from downtown austin to downtown san antonio(riverwalk) as when im in san antonio im not going to be doing any driving.Iknow the bus gets bad press but is it really that bad i couldnt handle it for a 1hr 20 min journey??

The bus station in SA is convenient enough for getting to hotels on the River Walk, but the Austin bus station really isn’t downtown. It’s up by the intersection of 290 & 35, so you would have to figure out how CapMetro could get you from where you are staying to there. If you are coming back to Austin to fly out & could find a cheap rental, you could take the hotels bus to the airport, rent a car & then return it to the airport. If you are flying out of SA, the one way charges on the rental would probably make it rather expensive to do that.
