According to the results page, Ericsson will now start 12th… that’s unfortunate. Especially since he certainly wasn’t the only one who exceeded track limits.
And the plot takes an extra twist…
Sam Bird says to Sky that Rossi is under investigation for impeding Nasr.Bird picking up the 4 pole points could be crucial for the championship! Gotta say Ericsson has had an unlucky season though (or clumsy). Big fan of his after seeing him demolish opposition in his first season of Formula BMW UK I think it was. Definitely a natural talent, but I guess unlikely to get another F1 chance (just a YDT a few years back). His career started after demolishing a lap record at a rental kart place! He was then convinced to carry on by an ex-racer who ran the place…
Sad though that the track limits and penalties are coming into play though. I was shocked when Abt almost made Rossi collect him on the way to setting a pole lap! There were others too… time to get the forensic rule book and video recording out… a la Japan a few years back!

Nice win for Alexander Rossi and Fabio Leimer delivers on his promise from the start of the season. Shame for Sam Bird, though. He has been in contention for a lot of titles the past few years.
@npf1 only the past two years actually..he didn’t really contend for the GP2 title in 2010 and 2011..
Catching up a bit on the early GP2 Series races, did Bird win a lot of his feature races doing a prime-prime strategy? If not, I feel he is unlucky not to have a shot at the title tomorrow, but the stall is what caused that. He’s coming along as a driver, and a reserve role at Mercedes with some on track testing would be a good place for him to be (and stand in if needed. Though I would have liked to see how good Davidson could do in a top car, but maybe he is a bit old now).
In such an inconsistent series, winning the title is all about having the least amount of mistakes. That’s what makes Vettel, Alonso and Raikkonen currently the best 3 F1 drivers – Hamilton is closest to joining them arguably, along with Hulkenberg. If you combined Coletti’s first half of the season with Leimer’s second half then you would have a dominant driver (a la Magnussen this year) that would definitely be progressing into F1 next year. Top F1 drivers have dominated in one season in GP2 and moved up – Rosberg, Hamilton, Hulkenberg, even Grosjean arguably. Maldonado took his time but got to that stage eventually.
Do the GP2 rules provide this inconsistency? With the reverse grid rules.. GP3 has the same thing put into it but on a slightly lesser level. It’ll be hard for Rossi if he is locked into using the options tomorrow. If he could run his second half rear primes on the front and use the new front primes on the rear, who knows…
Congrats to Leimer.. Valsecchi’s pick was proved right. Although where can he go from here? Rumours are he has backing… but if so, would he not be perfect for Sauber? Swiss, brings money, has tested for the team before…
