iSport said they couldn’t find fully-funded drivers. Dillmann has had sponsor problems in the past – it’s why he lost his seat at Rapax last year – whilst Frijns competes on a minimal budget. With Igor Mazepa being an investment banker, I’m guessing he’s got a little more disposable income to throw around than iSport did, and so he can afford to take drivers who don’t have full funding.

That makes sense. What chance do any of the new teams have of being competitive this year? Obviously it’s the same car, but how much do we know about the mechanics and engineers behind these new teams? Russian Time in particular – just how feasible is it for them to give Dillmann a car that’s capable of challenging teams like DAMS and ART over the course of a whole season? Are they taking on any iSport personnel?

A rare piece of good news in the young driver market. Pleased for Dillmann.

@keithcollantine Teams like Rapx, Addax and Caterham should be ashamed, they’ve been shown the way by newbies…

It’s less than two weeks before the green light in Malaysia, and yet 7 seats have not been filled yet; Russian Time, Caterham and Lazarus GP each have one seat still available, while Trident and Hilmer have not confirmed any driver yet. I realize times are tough, but it’s getting so late there is hardly time to board the plane to Kuala Lumpur if any deals are postponed any longer.

Does anyone have any idea what will happen, will all teams field two drivers, or is this business as usual for GP2?

@adrianmorse Caterham are almost certainly going to sign Sergio Canamasas, while Lazarus look set to do so for Kevin Giovesi. It is less simple for the other teams. Russian Time tested Robin Frijns, Christopher Zanella and Luciano Bacheta. Its worse for Trident who’ve given tests to Frijns, Nathanael Berthon and Rodolfo Gonzalez, with the Dutchman moving off to test for Russian Time on the last day, while Berthon was sidelined by contractual issues, and the team ran only Gonzalez for the last day. Hilmer ran Dillmann at Jerez and apart from that they’ve given Pal Varhaug, Conor Daly and Riccardo Agostini test days. Varhaug will probably get a seat, but Agostini has already confirmed participation in Auto GP, while Daly is looking good to land a GP3 drive with ART. They could split the second seat between those two, but for the Hockenheim round neither would be available. Also there is a question mark over Daniel de Jong, who will participate in both GP2 and Auto GP this year. For him too, the Hockenheim GP2 round is clashing with the Zandvoort Auto GP round. If the Dutchman chooses to give the Italian series priority, then a replacement will be needed for him too.

Actually, it’s usually like tihs. Because the cars only change every three years, drivers with previous experience of the chassis can afford to take a little longer to get a deal in place than Formula 1 drivers do, because they don’t have to learn the car.

    Giovesi confirmed at Lazarus:

@prisoner-monkeys Well that’s good. He’s less experienced than Binder, so will struggle initially, but his inherent pace should help him.

Just been re-watching last year’s Hungary sprint race. I’d forgotten it was Canamasas who pushed Trummer into the wall on the line – that moreso than the Singapore incident makes me question his continued participation in the series.

And then there was squeezing Berthon into the wall at Spa, which he at least did get a penalty for, unlike Hungary for whatever reason.

Just when you started to regain hope in the GP2 driver market…

Canamasas and Ma Qing – I’m sorry, but that must be the worst line-up in motorsport history.

Disappointing Rossi didn’t get it. So is he ‘doing a Bottas’ this year?

I don’t have much hope for GP2 in 2013 right now.
