@keithcollantine, I was wondering the same thing. Thought for sure Rossi was the obvious choice. Hopefully this means he’s gonna be getting a lot of seat time in FP1s this year. He was on NBCSN briefly with Will Buxton in both practice sessions, and at least implied that he’d be doing many sessions this year. I doubt he’ll get as many as Bottas did though.

@robk23 – Don’t let Caterham’s underwhelming line-up mislead you. The grid still has Calado, Abt, Evans, Nasr, Dillmann, Quaife-Hobbs and Leimer, all of whom are very strong.

Yeah, the grid for the most part is very strong. Canamasas’ ability to race clean and keep his head, maybe not so much if last year is anything to go by. You have to try pretty hard to replace Crestani and still make a bad impression…

I think we need to take Caterhams’ lineup with a pinch of salt, for one, Ma’s ability in single seaters is largely untested so we can’t right him off straight away.

As for Canamasas, he seemed to have a pretty good run in FR3.5 with a podium and a pole position, and apart from the fiasco in Singapore, it was hardly expected anyone driving for Lazarus would score any points anyway.

Could turn out to be the teams worst year in their history, or their best, but since we have a rather untested team, we’ll have to wait and see.

If there’s anything to go by, they can’t be worse than Gonzalez.

Yeah, I wouldn’t be so quick to write Ma off – he was within 107% of the fastest lap time at Monza last year, and that was his first appearance in a Formula 1 car. You don’t do that without at least a little bit of talent.

As for Canamasas his antics in Singapore were worthy of ridicule, but the original infraction was committed by one of his mechanics, and he was actually doing very well before he was called in to serve the penalty.

Meanwhile, reigning World Series champ Robin Frijns says he’s close to a deal with RUSSIAN TIME.
The name may not be too good, but the prospective lineup looks absolutely solid!!

Indeed, any team would be looking good with a line-up of Dillmann/Frijns – the fact that it’s in a brand new team makes things more interesting but far from impossible.

With a line-up like that, one would hope that RUSSIAN TIME doesn’t drop the ball and ends up as a backmarker team.

They bought iSport’s entry at the last minute, so one would hope that most of the iSport staff stayed on. It happened with MP Motorsport – when they picked up Coloni’s entry, they managed to keep about 90% of Coloni’s staff. Since Russian Time got iSport’s entry late in the game, there’s a risk that staff would have decided to look elsewhere, but they’ve definately picked up some people from Motopark Academy, who have picked up eight drivers’ titles in junior categories since 2004.

Russian Time, Hilmer and Trident had better get their drivers sorted – they should be on their way to Malaysia very soon, if they aren’t already.

RT and Hilmer don’t surprise me given they’re new teams, but why Trident are still to name either driver is a little strange.

    Race day announcements anyone?
(I mean practice but you know)

@araqiel I guess both RUSSIAN TIME and Trident are waiting for Robin Frijns to come up with the money for a race seat.

@matthijs, the closer Malaysia gets, the more I start to wonder what will happen if Frijns and other candidates do not come up with the money. Will the teams lower the price of their seats, or will they withdraw from the series? Can they even withdraw from the series without incurring a huge penalty from the FIA?

I suppose if there were lesser-talented but well-funded drivers available, they would have signed them by now. Perhaps Frijns is going to Malaysia with Sauber anyway (?), but other candidates had better make travel plans soon.

@adrianmorse Interesting thought. I suppose all these teams must be very anxious right now (or they know things we don’t). It’s really strange that apparently there are just not enough (wealthy) drivers to fill the seats.
    Btw Adrian: really nice avatar!
