Not bad for a team that only joined the grid two weeks ago!

Looking at the driver roster so far, I think the series has made up for – and then some – a lot of the creadibility it lost last year with such an underwhelming series of under-talented drivers. Robin Frijns is (looking like) the only notable exclusion, but with so many talented drivers already there, Frijns’ absence dampens my enthusiasm for this year’s championship only slightly.

    Trident announcement tomorrow

I held onto some hope that Frijns might be one of the drivers for Trident, but he just confirmed that he isn’t:

    http://www.gpupdate.net/en/gp2-news/291941/fr3-5-champion-frijns-left-without-gp2-seat/

From the article it seems he may have had the money for a couple of races, but he didn’t want to do that. It also says that he hopes to travel to some races with the Sauber team, but his travel schedule is yet to be confirmed by the team. So far no sign of “doing a Bottas”, then.

@adrianmorse So sad..it seems the guy has done too well too quickly, winning Formula BMW Europe, Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5 in three consecutive years..
He could still get a GT seat, but doubt he’ll want that.

I’d be surprised if we don’t see Frijns in a practice session this year, most likely at one of the European circuits where Hulkenberg and Guiterrez have driven before

  • Profile picture of wsrgo wsrgo said 3 months ago:

@ryanwilliams Chances are slim(no pun intended :D). Peter Sauber had said that they hadn’t got anything on the agenda for him and it was up to Robin to make sure he stayed in some form of racing.

Conor Daly confirmed on Twitter that he is driving for Hilmer.

Like Delta said, Daly just confirmed he is racing for Hilmer

FR3.5champion Robin Frijns is out of competitive motorsport in 2013, as is Autosport Rookie of the Year and FIA Formula 2 runner-up Matheo Tuscher…
Seriously, if guys like Rosenzweig and Trummer get seats ahead of these guys, something is SERIOUSLY with junior formulae…

It’s because they don’t have the budget. When Frijns entered Formula Renault 3.5 last year, he had just enough money for one season.

@prisoner-monkeys I understand your slightly pragmatic view, but this is not what should happen. If this continues, budding racers will be more engrossed in forming a good financial base, which will have more priority than say, developing fitness, or understanding the ropes and nuances of driving and the car.
All it takes is to look at Caterham. Their F1 pairing is bad, their GP2 pairing is worse. Clearly, they give more importance to money than talent/ability/aptitude.
    Unfortunately, it has just begun.

Regarding Frijns, I would have enjoyed seeing him in GP2 from an entertainment point of view, but would it have been a step up for him? The FR3.5 cars were quicker last year.
