@keithcollantine I know, they’re about at least a tenth quicker this year too. But unfortunately there’s still to be an instant where a non-Red Bull Junior Team driver came to F1 directly from FR3.5(apart from Bianchi’s last-minute signing). Team bosses don’t consider it in the same breath as GP2, although I’m not quite sure why…
And Frijns would be in a single-seater championship, thus not becoming too rusty. That is, of course, assuming that we do see Frijns in a Sauber next year. That can only happen if Ferrari replace Massa with Hulkenberg(words ‘long shot’ somehow suggest themselves) or if they drop Gutierrez or Telmex(if they are Macca-bound) or both…

@wsrgo Robert Kubica came straight to F1 from WSR

@ryanwilliams He got a test seat with BMW but was promoted midway through 2006. I wouldn’t call that straight from FR3.5. Theoretically, even Frijns could do that this year.

@keithcollantine: I think the step from Fr3.5 is a step sideways, not up. But Frijns only has 4 years of experience in autosport, so every year will help. GP2 is also ideal to get to know these difficult Pirelli-tyres.

Trident to field Nathanaël Berthon & Kevin Ceccon this weekend. No news on further rounds however

I guess Frijns will still get a run out in the Sauber Young Drivers’ Test at least.. and could do some races in GP2 if he wants to mid-year if someone drops out or he is not getting enough involvement with Sauber at the F1 races..

    As expected:

If I read it correctly: like Trident, these drivers haven’t been confirmed for the season.

I think you might be reading a bit too much into that. “Daly and Varhaug join Hilmer in Malaysia” could easily mean that they’ve formally joined the team as racing drivers in Malaysia.

@prisoner-monkeys According to the official GP2 website, neither Himer nor Trident have confirmed any drivers beyond the Malaysia round..

That ‘Class of 2013′ pic on the front page of the official site… who is that in the centre of the back row, and are those some rather uncool shades, or joke/3D glasses?

    Pal Varhaug.

Ah, okay. Bit of a joker is he? Maybe wants to concentrate more on not being this year’s Texeira, who was apparently doing some very important work in 26th place for Rapax last year.

    An interesting read here.

This conversation hints Frijns might be joining GP2 in Bahrain, which would be great! There’s also a small chance he will do FP1 for Sauber instead of Gutierrez, but I think GP2 is far more likely.

The Swiss news source Blick has revealed that Frijns allegedly turned down two offers to drive for a GP2 team ‘for free’ the 2013 season. He is said to have rejected it because the teams were not frontrunners. Probably Trident is one of the teams. Sauber is not impressed by his attitude.

I don’t know how trustworthy Blick is, but Robin’s attitude strikes me. His rival Bianchi is showing what a big impression one can make with inferior material.
