Calado and Abt in the same team? Great pairing indeed.

@robk23 @enigma Thay are realy good, but I think that Abt won’t fight for title, with these Pirelli tyres you have yo know very well, I can see him winning one Sprint race in the end of the year, more than that would surprise me. And next year GP2 will be very competitive, this year I think that it was one of the less competitive year of GP2

    Another driver announcement coming soon:

    @keithcollantine

I’d guess Evans at Arden or Rossi at Caterham; those are the most obvious signings yet to be announced. I’m predicting Arden will partner Evans with Cecotto because of the team’s results with the experienced Razia last year. The identity of Rossi’s teammate is still a mystery to me. It’d be logical for Foresti to remain in WSR and so the team might opt for Trummer or another Gonzalez-esque pay driver.

Looks like one of Arden’s seats will be filled this morning… https://twitter.com/ardenmotorsport/status/288565860002586624

Although it could be for their GP3 team, you never know!

    Sure enough, Arden sign Cecotto:

That will be his fourth year in the category, he also did a few races in 2009.

    Press release:

Arden International is delighted to announce that Johnny Cecotto Jnr will join their GP2 team for the 2013 Season.

The talented young Venezuelan driver (23), with several years’ experience in the GP2 Series, will be working closely with the team to build on his successful 2012 season, which saw him achieve four podiums with two wins and a Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi with Toro Rosso. His season was topped in particular by a memorable win in the feature race around the streets of Monaco after also dominating qualifying the day before.

Arden, together with Luiz Razia embarked on one of their most successful GP2 seasons in 2012 by taking the runner up spot in the Drivers’ Championship with four wins along the way.

Julian Rouse, Arden Sporting Director comments:
“It is great to have Johnny joining our GP2 team for the 2013 season. He has shown great potential since he first joined the Series three years ago and he has developed strongly with the current car and the Pirelli tyres. We had an excellent test together in Jerez, finishing both sessions at the top of the time sheets, which assured us of his talent on track and technical ability to work with the team. I am more than confident that if we work hard together we can go one better in the Drivers’ Championship in 2013!”

    Johnny Cecotto Jnr:
I’m delighted to have signed for Arden Motorsport. It’s one of the best teams in current Motorsport with a great history too. We had the possibility to get to know each other in a test and straight away there was a great feeling between the engineers, mechanics and me. I feel it was the right moment to sign so that we have plenty of time to prepare for the Championship well and I can also prepare mentally and physically for the 2013 GP2 Series. The target is definitely to win the Championship and I’m sure that both the team and I have the potential to do so.”

Cecotto is another drive for whom 2013 will be a make-or-break season. No doubt he’s subsidising the second seat somewhat so that the team can take Mitch Evans – with Cecotto’s money, I can’t imagine they’d keep Razia or Trummer.

@prisoner-monkeys Razia already said that he won’t be at GP2 next year, I can see Evans pairing with Cecotto

The grid is looking a little underwhelming again in my opinion, that said I’ll be interested to see what Calado and Nasr can do in their second seasons.

We can pretty much guarantee then that Arden will complete their lineup with Evans, as anywhere else for him such as FR3.5 won’t hold as much for him.
Ever since it’s been ‘pretty much’ decided that Felix da Costa will be doing FR3.5 this year, a lot of drivers have been announced for GP2 instead.

  • Profile picture of KateM KateM said 4 months, 1 week ago:

Given the alleged gaping chasm in pricetag between FR3.5 and GP2, I’m pretty sure which series Felix da Costa is doing was not a particularly big factor for the majority of drivers. The only new driver confirmed to be doing GP2 so far is Abt, and it wasn’t like he couldn’t challenge da Costa on pace last year – he overtook him for a win! For all the recent hype about FR3.5, it still hasn’t had a champion promoted to an F1 race seat since Kubica.

It’s not shaping up to be a classic field, but so far I’d say it’s looking better than last year. A couple of decent drivers carrying on with good teams, and hopefully a few promising rookies as well.

Dillmann, who won a race for Rapax last year then was dropped, is hoping for a return:

He’s currently tipped for the second MW Arden seat alongside Cecotto Jnr.
