I’ve heard some interesting chatter, namely that Robin Frijns has been offered a seat with MP Motorsport (they’re a Dutch team and already have a Dutch driver in de Jong, so it makes sense for them to chase Frijns), but that he is trying to get a seat with iSport.

I’ve also heard that Hilmer Motorsport will be presenting their team for the first time today, unveiling their livery – said to be orange, blue and grey – and announcing both their drivers. So far, nothing.

And Lazarus is apparently seeking a Venezuelan driver to satisfy their sponsor’s demands. The name Roberto la Rocca has been named in conjunction with the second seat.

@prisoner-monkeys That would be nice for GP2, if Frijns gets a seat, this year will be a very interesting year for GP2, with several title contenders: Nasr,Calado….

@prisoner-monkeys La Rocca has shown decent pace in his stints in European F3 Open (certainly a less prestigious championship than the Euroseries) but is very accident-prone, and that’s the last thing the series needs for its credibility. As for Frijns, one of the iSport seats has been linked to the mediocre Facu Regalia. Should Frijns oust him, Regalia has told the Argentine press that he’s looking at a Lotus GP3 seat as well.

As for Hilmer, Chris van der Drift’s name has been mentioned because of the team’s partnership with JD Motorsport (the team that took the Kiwi to the 2008 Formula Master title). Hilmer’s technical director, Gianni Bianchi, is van der Drift’s manager.

Additionally, Kevin Giovesi has also been tied to the second Lazarus seat but as @prisoner-monkeys mentions, the team would like a Venezuelan to partner Rene Binder.

Meanwhile, Pal Varhaug has been in talks with Caterham’s GP2 squad. The Norwegian, who endured a miserable 2011 campaign compared to champion teammate Romain Grosjean, has collected American sponsorship following his AutoGP triumphs. Should the team sign him, he is expected to partner Alexander Rossi.

@Felipe Bomeny, Since the large shunt is Mr. Bianchi no longer manager of Chris vd Drift. And the team Himler only make use of the facilities of JD Motorsport.

Not a driver annoucement, but Caterham have revealed their new livery for this season, which unsurprisingly, is exactly the same as the team’s F1 outfit

ART Grand Prix won’t have the Lotus Livery:

@gabrielfernando It’ll be nice to have the ART white and red back. I couldn’t get used to the Lotus ART thing.

  • Profile picture of Gabriel Fernando Gabriel Fernando said 4 months ago:

@keithcollantine Yeah, the old red with white is better.

Ordinarily, I’d say those colours would look vulgar together, but I really like the way ART has put them together.

I’m curious as to how this affects the relationship to Lotus F1, though. Daniel Abt in particular graduated to GP2 from the Lotus-ART GP3 team. Now that their relationship has apparently been wound down (if not severed), I wonder how that might affect his career?

@prisoner-monkeys Daniel Abt has been linked to Williams’ reserve role, formerly occupied by Valtteri Bottas. Also, his father runs the Abt team in DTM so he has plenty of backing from major sponsors affiliated with the team. He’s regarded as a bright talent- he just needs to perform. He can’t flop like he did in F3 Euroseries, or else he’ll end up racing his for his family’s Audi squad.

I’ve always felt that the livery looks weird because the yellow and white stripes on the engine cover don’t continue down over the sidepod. They just …. stop.

To be fair, it is now pretty much expected that drivers will spend two years in GP2: the first year is introductory; the second is when they are expected to perform. But even if Varhaug struggled in his first year, he’s clearly refined his racecraft in AutoGP. He was, after all, racing against Quaife-Hobbs and Sirotkin, who are no slouches. At the very least, he can’t possibly be worse than Rodolfo Gonzalez.
