True, they do take well-funded drivers – but all of those drivers have been very competitive. So thile they might be taking Cecotto’s money, that doesn’t automatically mean he is without talent. Even if he scored no points in two seasons, GP2 is not as equal as the promoters might like us to believe. Being in the right team can make a huge difference. It’s easy for us to say that they made the wrong chocie in Cecotto, but we don’t have access to the same information as the team does. They are, after all, the reigning teams’ champions – I can’t imagine that they would be so desperate for money that they would overlook talent.

This is the biggest indication yet that GP2 is broken.

I wouldn’t say it’s broken. I’d say it’s simply too expensive. I’ve heard it costs about $2 million per season, and it’s a two-year program these days, so you’re looking at spending at least $4 million dollars if you want to race in GP2.

I can believe they’d be that desperate for money, I really, really can. I think a seat at Addax costs more like $5 million now. That prices most drivers out.

I’m not sure people accept this, but the vast, vast majority of driver signings at sub-F1 level are based almost entirely on cash. Even Lotus ART are running two guys with huge funding behind them. If Calado didn’t have his RSF money he wouldn’t be there, simple as that; ditto Guttierez with Telmex. I’m sure they rate them, but they’d drop both in a heartbeat if the money dried up. If you don’t have the money don’t even bother applying.

Grosjean at DAMS last year was a very rare exception: they found the money to run him. He won the title because he’s a genuine talent who was up against a load of decent, but not stellar, well-funded drivers. And now DAMS have followed it up by taking on a decent, well-funded driver themselves.

Ultimately these teams exists to survive first and succeed second. For God’s sake Rodolfo Gonzalez has been in this series for two seasons! There is no talent there, it’s blatantly obvious, but he gets drives because he pays his bills on time, and that’s what teams need. Arden are running Trummer, who was like 18th in GP3 last year. Do they seriously rate him, or do they just trust that he’ll have the money in their account when requested?

It’s often a joke amongst mechanics within junior series teams how bad the guys they run are. They know it, but at the end of the day they want to keep their jobs. Running someone super fast is great, but it’s bugger all use if you have to jack the season in after a few rounds because the team’s gone bust.

What irks me is that the series allows drivers like Palmer and Cecotto coming off the back of awful, awful campaigns, to move to top teams. It’s a bit of a joke really, rewarding poor performances. And the GP2 PR machine drones out about their potential and acts as if these deals are done on talent. I think Addax would be running Roberto Mehri given the choice. I’d settle for them running Daniel Juncadella, though even he is ABSOLUTELY MNTED with Middle-Eastern oil money.

Anyway, GP2′s not broken, but it can’t go on like this whilst retaining any credibility.

Or it’s simple economics – supply and demand. The price is higher because there are more drivers pushing for an Addax seat. Everybody wants to race for the best team. And because they’re the best team, they’re not strapped for cash. They wouldn’t be the best team if they were.

I think you’ve just automatically assumed the worst because Addax are a good team and you do not think Cecotto is a particularly good driver.

To be honest, this has disappointed me. I think Valsecchi’s better than Cecotto, and both DAMS and Addax are now competitive teams. I think Davide can “do a Pantano”, i.e. win the title due to experience. Cecotto might have some good results, but it’s more up to the car. He was disappointing last year.
I also saw nothing in Palmer, but his palmarés (no pun intended :P ) show promise. I also see little in Ericsson.
Gutierrez, Calado and Coletti have potential. Onidi might.
Trummer let me down in two GP3 seasons. Melker on the other hand did well.
For Trident, keeping Richelmi is a good move, but signing Leal is a very bad one.

Now, there’s a choice that I think makes sense.

This could have potential. I’s expect JK to thoroughly thrash Cecotto. Be interesting to see if he has what it takes to launch a title bid.

    Fabio Leimer joins Racing Engineering:

Racing Engineering are delighted to announce Fabio Leimer as their driver for the 2012 GP2 Series.

After very positive post-season test days in Jerez and Barcelona, which saw Fabio setting the fastest lap times and a sensational race weekend in Abu Dhabi, where Fabio grabbed pole position and the feature race win, it was a logic step to continue this successful combination between the young Swiss driver and the Spanish team from Sanlucar de Barrameda.

The 22 years old Swiss driver is one of the fastest and most experienced drivers to enter the 2012 GP2 series. A proven race winner, Fabio will start his first season as Racing Engineering driver with the target of being one of the main contenders for the championship that this year kicks off at Sepang, in Malaysia, the next 24th of March.

Alfonso de Orléans-Borbón, president of Racing Engineering:
“I am very happy that Fabio joins the team for the 2012 season. He is a driver with tremendous talent and tenacity. He never gives up and has shown so during the post season tests as well as the race meeting in Abu Dhabi, which he dominated in the Racing Engineering car. Our aim as a team is to make sure he wins the championship and we are putting all our tools at his disposal. After the great work we did together this winter, all we have to do is fine tune everything at the next tests in Jerez and Barcelona so the competition for the 2012 Champion begins.”

    Fabio Leimer:
“I am extremely happy I could sign an agreement with the Spanish Racing Engineering team and to participate with them in the 2012 GP2 Series. I felt already very comfortable with the team during the first tests. During these tests in Jerez and Barcelona, but also the races in Abu Dhabi we were very competitive, and if we work like this during the 2012 season, then I am convinced we will be quite high up in the final standings of the championship. I am really looking forward to working with Racing Engineering and am thankful to the team for believing in me and that they will always provide me with the best possible car.”

I knew Leimer was going to Racing Engineering when they dominated from testing to the Season Finale.
He was in great form in November, if he can keep it through this season he can be a contender for the title.

Pal Varhaug is frank about his situation on Twitter:

“getting close for a gp2 seat. missing some cash!”

Doesn’t reflect too well on GP2 having prospective drivers saying that sort of thing but it’s the way things are at present and not just in that series.

  • Profile picture of Fixy Fixy said 1 year, 3 months ago:

@keithcollantine – Varhaug was appalling last season, it’s a pity the teams don’t have higher ambitions. It’s so sad that it’s mostly the bad drivers who have cash!

  • Profile picture of Joel Holland Joel Holland said 1 year, 3 months ago:

If Varhaug doesn’t return it will be no loss, on a sporting level anyway. After being thoroughly embarrassed by Grosjean it’s a surprise he even wants to come back for more.
