Mega, absolutely brilliant. Nasr is a proper driver and it’s great to see him in GP2.

And he’s with a good team, too. I heard he was talking to Carlin, but they’re pretty useless – they only really exist to give Max Chilton a drive. Let’s hope that with his credentials, Nasr will prove to be better than Bianchi.

I think he’s capable of going out there and beating Valsecchi. On raw pace there’s no doubt in my mind that Felipe is quicker, though Valsecchi’s vast experience may put him ahead early on. But this is a kid who jumped in a Daytona Prototype and took to it like a duck to water. I really don’t think there’s a better driver in the field… but we shall see.

I think Valsecchi is mostly there to give the team a bit of experience. They leapt up to be highly competitive last year, but they lost Grosjean to Formula 1 and Pal Varhaug has been dropped. So they need someone experienced to keep them stable. I’m willing to bet Nasr will be the driver they back as a fast horse.

Yes, I would hope so. Arguably this is a stronger line-up than last year, as they now have a solid experienced driver and a fast rookie, as opposed to a fast experienced driver and a useless rookie. Could be scrapping with ART for the teams’ title, especially with the uninspiring Addax line-up.

I think Varhaug had potential, especially since GP2 is a two-year campaign these days. And I think Kral could be a diamond in the rough at Addax. But Nasr is defiantely one of the most exciting signings.

The question is if DAMS signed Valsecchi knowing they’d have signed Nasr! If they did, they’re clearly hoping for Nasr to win the title and for Valsecchi to ammass many points and win the teams’ title.
Or they could want to give Nasr experience for a 2013 season, but at the same time score many points thanks to Valsecchi’s experience.

If, like Varhaug, you score zero points whilst your team-mate wins the title, you’re wasting your time. I don’t care if that team-mate has vast amounts more experience, if you’re any good – have the talent needed for F1 – you’ll get somewhere. Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton et al would have scored points in that situation. Varhaug is wasting his time and someone else’s money.

Kral though could, as you say, could be one to watch.

GP2 is a two-year program these days, and DAMS were hardly expecting to fight for the titles in 2011 considering that they had never finished a season higher than fifth. So keeping that in mind, I think Varhaug would do okay somewhere in a midfield team. Maybe not set the world on fire, but he got a few finishes around the 10th-13th mark, and even took eighth in Spain.

Fabrizio Crestani joins new team Venezuela GP Lazarus, who’ve taken the place of Super Nova:

  • Profile picture of Joel Holland Joel Holland said 1 year, 2 months ago:

A return to form from GP2 following the confirmation of a genuinely exciting talent in the shape of Nasr. Crestani ousted Ricci from DPR in 2010 (after Giacomo had taken his first main series win for the team in Hungary) and has done little else of note. If they do indeed put Gonzalez in the other car these boys will be strong favourites for the wooden spoon this year.

I’d say Lazarus took Crestani because he drove for them in Auto GP. They replaced Super Nova at the last minute, so the most important thing for them right now is to hit the ground running. They already know Crestani and he knows them, so he can speed the process up a little bit. It may not be an awe-inspiring choice, but it is a good choice for the team, based on what they need right now.

van der Garde and Razia for the Caterham seats? Clos at Rapax? Apparently RE offered Roberto Mehri a cut-price deal to try and get him onboard but he still couldn’t afford it (real shame).
