@thomf1s I think you mean Toby Moody – you seem to have mated the old BTCC commentator with the new one there!

@AdrianMorse I suspect so – the difficult thing is testing this sort of device before it is put on a car.

I think the only way to really test how well the Rear Wheel Guards perform is during race conditions. Too many odd scenarios, angles, closing rates, etc. They cut down on rear punctures, but don’t look like they’ll keep the cars from taking flight during certain rear crash conditions.

Yes, I’m afraid it’s looking like though they improve the racing, it’s not lessening the danger. These have been touted since Wheldon’s death as lessening the chance of a car being launched. But Wheldon ran into the back of the car ahead at a pretty fast closing speed. Like others have said, I’m pretty sure if they don’t hold up on a street course, a scenario like we saw at Vegas won’t be avoided by these little fenders. Still, as odd as they look on an open wheel car, I approve of the way they’ve allowed cars to race closer without as many punctures and they don’t seem to be doing any harm. So there’s no reason to ditch the idea yet.

Andretti has spoken out on Twitter:

Ok so my comments on the wheel guards are that they could have saved me from going over. The closing rate was great so it was a big impact.

However it is concerning how the car flew at such a low speed. I will never sugarcoat concerns regarding safety.

I’m not really a fan of Marco Andretti, but I believe he’s absolutely right here and I respect him for speaking out.
