Looking at the qualifying results from Iowa today it’s pretty obvious which engine and aero combination you want to have:

    1. Simon Pagenaud, Penske, Chevrolet – 185.855mph
    2. Josef Newgarden, Carpenter, Chevrolet – 185.639mph
    3. Helio Castroneves, Penske, Chevrolet – 185.433mph
    4. Max Chilton, Ganassi, Chevrolet – 185.419mph
    5. Charlie Kimball, Ganassi, Chevrolet – 184.489mph
    6. Tony Kanaan, Ganassi, Chevrolet – 184.43mph
    7. Ed Carpenter, Carpenter, Chevrolet – 184.339mph
    8. Will Power, Penske, Chevrolet – 183.984mph
    9. Mikhail Aleshin, Schmidt, Honda – 182.754mph
    10. Scott Dixon, Ganassi, Chevrolet – 182.647mph
    11. Juan Pablo Montoya, Penske, Chevrolet – 182.641mph
    12. Graham Rahal, RLL, Honda – 182.253mph
    13. Takuma Sato, Foyt, Honda – 181.949mph
    14. Jack Hawksworth, Foyt, Honda – 181.7mph
    15. Carlos Munoz, Andretti, Honda – 181.067mph
    16. Sebastien Bourdais, KVSH, Chevrolet – 180.925mph
    17. Alexander Rossi, Andretti-Herta, Honda – 180.92mph
    18. Gabby Chaves, Coyne, Honda – 180.39mph
    19. Marco Andretti, Andretti, Honda – 180.286mph
    20. Ryan Hunter-Reay, Andretti, Honda – 179.903mph
    21. Conor Daly, Coyne, Honda – 178.646mph
    22. James Hinchcliffe, Schmidt, Honda – 175.027mph

Also interesting to see Max Chilton so high up – he won on this track in Indy Lights last year. The Simon Pagenaud steamroller goes on and he scored Penske’s 500th pole position. And Andretti, so dominant at this track in the past, well down in the pecking order.

Oh, and Pastor Maldonado was an interested visitor to the paddock…

Tomorrow’s race coverage starts from 22:30 UK time on BT Sports ESPN, I’ll be doing the continuity commentary during the US ad breaks.

It’ll be interesting to see what he can cause from there. If he can find sufficient funds I’m pretty sure he could be at Sauber next year.
