edit: No great surprise that ratings were up. This season has been very good so far, and interest in the series seems to be increasing again. Both good signs.

@matt90 It’s a question of interpretation – before this season the new race director said he would soften the stance on blocking which had previously forbidden drivers from making defensive moves:

Haha! Love that commentary. That sad little moan after the initial silence following Sato’s crash is priceless. It definitely looked like Franchitti left less room than he should’ve, but it’s hard to know if that was intentionally dirty driving or not. At those speeds it all happens pretty fast. Hopefully Sato’s day will come, sooner rather than later…

Watching it again, I still feel he left him room. I don’t blame either Sato or Franchitti for the moves they made; I would have done the same. It’s the last lap and they’re going to go right to the limit of what’s allowed for a win as monumental as this. Only thing is, if you’re going to make a move, you’ve gotta keep in pointed the right way. It could have gone just as badly for Franchitti because he could have been collected in all that.

There’s always some very wild action on the last lap (2010 Conway air born, 2011 JR Hildebrand into the wall on the last corner)

Thanks for the Bobby Rahal link @don123, as he says Sato will get way more recognition for having a go than if he’d just settled for second. I wonder if Nico Rosberg should have done the same, a few hours earlier? I bet his Dad would have tried.

Interesting that he thought Kanaan jumped the restart. I can’t comment (missed it because Sky was too busy telling us, in a deep and self-important voice, that it’s “the new home of Formula 1″) but for sure I’ve never seen anyone jump that many places in an F1 restart!
