While I’m intrigued, as someone who has lots of Hoosier blood in his family and has idolized the 500 since I was a child, I’m also a bit disappointed. The race has a kind of sacredness to it that few other races compare to. The fact that Indy Car still sets aside an entire month to practice and qualifying in accordance to tradition attests to this. It’s meant to be a huge and unique event. I would definitely like to go see them race on the road course because I’m curious and I love road course racing. But I wonder how fans of LeMans would feel if they started the month with a race on the Bugatti course? Or if the comparison even works. Were it happening at any other time of the year, I’d be all for it. But the month of May means the 500. I’d hate to see it diluted, though there’s no guarantee this will do that. These are just ramblings from someone who clutches the race close to his heart.
