Wow, that thing’s a mess. Not one person starts from their qualifying position.

Everything’s shuffled because of the high amount of engine changes. 11 Chevy, 3 Lotus.

Whoops, I missed this thread and started another! Here’s what I posted:

With 14 drivers getting qualifying penalties the grid for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach takes some figuring out. Happily IndyCar have done the hard work for us.

The top three in qualifying were Ryan Briscoe, Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay. They all get penalties and falls to 11th to 13th respectively.

Dario Franchitti inherits pole position and shares the front row with Josef Newgarden, who originally qualified seventh.

Justin Wilson and Simon Pagenaud make up row two, followed by Scott Dixon and Takuma Sato.

Then it’s Mike Conway, Graham Rahal, Charlie Kimball and Alex Tagliani – the latter moving up 11 places having qualified 21st.

James Hinchcliffe is 16th, Helio Castroneves 18th and Rubens Barrichello 22nd. It looks like being quite a race…

Here’s the top six in qualifying – five of which had penalties:

So in IndyCar they get the pole point and money based on the fastest time, before applying penalties (guess penalties are applied if they are based on something happening in the session, like blocking or something)!

After seeing how much they were able to race close at Barber last time round I think that having the fastest 3 guys in 11th-13th it will be quite a race!

It’s great to see Dario Franchitti finally coming to turns with the new car.
I notice that in the 2012’s field there is way more known drivers than there initially was during the first IndyCar season after the unification.
The ones I’m familiar from ChampCar and probably from IRL as well are:
    1 (11) Ryan Briscoe 0 1:08.6089
    2 (12) Will Power 0.0984 1:08.7073
    3 (13) Ryan Hunter-Reay 0.1074 1:08.7163
    4 (1) Dario Franchitti 0.4238 1:09.0327
    5 (15) EJ Viso 0.4545 1:09.0634
    8 (18) Helio Castroneves 0.2330 1:09.0846
    9 (3) Justin Wilson 0.2394 1:09.0910
    10 (19) Tony Kanaan 0.3471 1:09.1987
    12 (5) Scott Dixon 0.5142 1:09.3658
    15 (8) Graham Rahal 1:09.9
    18 (21) Marco Andretti 1:10.5
    20 (23) Oriol Servia 1:10.6
    21 (10) Alex Tagliani 1:10.8
    24 (25) Sebastien Bourdais 1:10.8

I’m soo happy to have them all racing now in one series.

Should be really interesting to see how Briscoe and Power come through the field. Hoping Newgarden leads into turn one – that would be interesting!
